Avoid a fire, everyone should read this

  1. Mine are all done now. The breathers are now connected into the top of the airfilter, they were just open to the noisy cupboard before.o_O

  2. My van doesn't vent to an air filter, it vents to outside from a t-piece which I'm sure isn't right. Pics:

  3. At least it is not onto a hot exhaust I suppose!

  4. while my air box and carbs and manifolds are off i decided to take my bulkhead off and check the ones by the tank, probably not the worst ever to be found but glad i checked..

  5. then checked the really awkward one and not sure whether its worse than it looks or if its in ok condition...

what do you guys think? the pipe itself feels absolutely solid, could have a thin metal outer sleeve but i doubt it, although it did feel cold to touch...?

Judging by your other ones I'd be inclined to replace the awkward one as well, at least then you know.
Also it's not actually that difficuly to get to, especially if you take the rear light cluster out.

  7. i can reach it fine but its getting any kind of leverage to get the tubing off, bit of spray grease would help but feels stuck fast, and I have a leisure battery in the way also, may end up taking that out too lol!

  8. i did mine a few weeks back, tool the light cluster out and the leisure battery and it wasn't that hard to do..

How about that guy? Looks alright but I do have a petrol smell.

When I take out the light cluster that's going to turn to dust so I'll add that to the list too!

  10. if you can still smell fuel then the ones inside your fuel tank compartment may not be in such good condition, there are 4 small ones like the above plus the big (60mm approx) hose to check. mine were gone so am replacing them, I was told to jubilee clip them but not too tight. If you do this and while your fire wall between your engine bay and fuel tank compartment is off, it might be an idea to change your fuel sender that goes inside the tank, takes a bit of a wiggle, and its clockwise to twist out and the other way to tighten, grease up the little rubber ring seal before fitting the replacement as it can grip and fail. I had to use a flat head screw driver to give it enough effort to twist. while its out may aswell do all you can to save doing it again. lol, sorry for the essay but thought id pass on my experiences.

  11. Thanks! No an essay is good as detail works for me.

Firewall off is an engine out job?

  12. nope, my carbs and manifolds need changing so my carbs, the manifolds attaching them to the block, the air blower are all out. can take pics if needed... about 6 screws keep the fire wall in place 3 each side i think, then the top lip is hooked behind the top access hatch rim (if you have one) and the bottom edge is held in place with the foam seal. mine took a bit of effort to pull out but yours hopefully would be easier. I have a 2.0l type 4 engine what do you have?

The fire wall has 3 (?) screws along the bottom edge too; only accessible from under the bus. Loads of people don't know they're there so rip out the firewall screwing it up....

  14. mine didnt have any along the bottom, it was held in place behind the seal and the black metal heat shield about the engine you talking about the same engine?

  15. Mines a type 1 dual carb, ill have a look under and see if I can locate the screws - I do have a top access hatch so that should help too :)

  16. ah good, if nothing else it lets more light into the engine bay so its easier to see.

  17. There was 1 either side, hidden if you don't know where they are, obvious if you do!

  18. To the uninitiated, all VW campers are split screen. Like all vacuum cleaners are hoovers.
