The guy who owned the bus before us let everyman and his dog work on the bus as he was far from mechanically minded - apparently it had a set of polished fuchs on when he owned it, lowered on beam adjusters. Anyway, from what I was told us he was out one day nr Leicester and he approached an island & someone slammed into it, sending him sideways into a low bollard (?) which he managed to clear and bend the front beam and also damage the steering. He spent a fair bit of cash having it restored and back on the road - the damage was limited and from what he said a good job was done on the resto - when we bought Gusbus (he wasn't called that back then)we could not see any signs of front end damage only where it had been repaired at the back. Absolute VW have done work as have a company called Bus Stop in Leicester besides a gang of so called mates!
As you say, he'd have spent a fair bit of cash then. I'm amazed at the confidence & skill of all you folks who undertake these resto's & the end results are often stunning.
he spent £1500 as I know of, he also had a "new" engine fitted ex Beetle, that was past its best too 45kmh flat out up the M1

let's have a look at your introduction thread and van then fella, i'm all for benefit of the doubt but as said above to lurk since April then pop on a random thread and start disecting someones bus is a strange foot to start off on... i've had the pee taken out of mine too with "ringer" jokes even though i know it's original - don't forget, unless you know 100% the history of a van you'll never know if it was a demo van or a trial etc, i'm sure "something" is strange about morks van but it's still his personal thing and it's a bit rude to pick it apart until you know him a bit better.
It's about the difference between 1973 CALENDAR year and 1973 MODEL year. The 1973 model year went from August 1972 to July 1973. As an 'M' registered van, I would expect Gusbus to be a latein the 1973 CALENDAR year, and therefore 1974 MODEL year. The 1974 MODEL year was when the flap was replaced by the flush fitting fuel cap.
Good theory, but the orange chassis number shows a 73 model year. Right I'm out if here, this isn't helping.

easy way to sort, is it on the "orange" vin on the v5? which if that is just a repair panel from accident it shouldn't be? personally i wouldn't care if it was tax free, i'd fiddle mine tomorrow if i could
I'll have a look and see what it says - Im certain its white though, tbh it will need changing due to the respray anyway, it needs the engine number changing for the new 1641 we fitted!
You know what mines a 73 but, has been changed to look like an prototype bay by previous owners, I'm restoring it now and keeping all the early bits cos I like it like that, its not genuine but, I don't care I like it as is. it wasn't tax free when I bought it but, under the changes coming up will be.
