It'll be interesting to hear how all that works out.

  2. I make a point of overtaking slow-moving Audis on the motorway in the van, just to see the look of disgust on their face...

    Definitely.
With my old stock set up (1776 cc engine running a single genuine solex, oil bath air cleaner, normal fan shroud etc), it was all happy around 50-55mph, and the dipstick temperature gauge would sit around 100-110C in the 'normal' summer temperatures; rising to the uncomfortable 120C if I went over 60mph for more than a few minutes.
The engine is a TES special, so not lovingly crafted, but functional.
I'm hoping for a noticeable improvement, with no need to slow down at 65mph - or at least not for oil temperature related reasons.
I guess the run up to Techenders at the start of summer will be the first big test, and a journey that I've done many times, so it'll be easy to make comparisons.

Without wishing to start a war, you need a type-4 for that, it's precisely why I made the change and I had to change vans to one it would ft into as well!
I'll put my bet in at 62mph which seems to be the tipping point for the type-1 engines I've had.

  6. I'd say what you've got is ideal for a Bay. Full of air-cooled goodness, not really a ball of fire, but can easily keep up on the motorway. Perfect!

Now you've just got to squeeze that small-block Chevy V8 into Henry. A big blower would look great sticking out of the bonnet

Uphill, downhill along the motorway for a tank full?

  9. Finally got around to replacing the flooring. Goodbye dull and functional black with the mysterious melted patch, hello blue and white checkerboard, so I now match 80% of all other vans. The tiles had been sitting in a box for a couple of years, a lockdown job that never happened. I'm quite pleased with the result, went down much easier than I thought.

  10. You do realise having two classics makes you properly certifiable?

Great to hear Henry is progressing to life back on the road.

To be honest, I'm happy if it's 62mph. I'm no speed king, and in a vehicle shaped like a brick, I've not got the balls for it ;)
I'll be interested to see how it does pan out though. If the twin carbs mean the engine isn't straining so much to reach a 'safe' speed on the occasions I use motorways, that's got to be good. And any additional cooling is definitely a help. Most of the time though, I'm a happy potterer, with no need to get from A-B at lightning quick velocity.

Quite likely the single carb was throttling it at higher revs making it sound strained, but it probably wasn't.

  13. Ovaries, surely?

It's Mark Darby that's lost his balls.
