But why? Is it just a random cover all type of thing? Where did this 034 designation originate? Is it a replacement bosch started supplying after discontinuing the vast array of original ones on the link I put up earlier? I bet someone on Samba knows the answer.

I’ve emailed 123 support anyway and asked which curve to select. Wouldn’t expect 0 of 9 would cause any harm.

They have support? First I heard of it. Let's see if the reply simply refers you on to the supplier, that's how they used to handle their "support". I have a feeling the inventor sold the company and the now owners haven't really got a clue or any interest in how it works.

    From the 123 support page:

Hidden away among the many questions on the support page there is one reference to contacting them if your supplier ("who would have more idea about curves for particular vehicles") can't help, so maybe you'll have luck but I doubt it.

  6. Did you purchase the 123 R-V model?

  7. Last digits of a Bosch part number, as I recall.

  8. I asked the question on Itinerant Aircooled, and the answer was "As tight as possible".

It appears to have become a generic term for SVDA distributors paired with 34 pict carbs. Funny that the old volks home list doesn't have this one, they are all 205*. Sadly not all 205* distributors are SVDA so that wouldn't be a useful shorthand. Blah, blah, blah.

  10. But isn't 205 a VW part number? Can't remember.

Yes, but help me out here - click the link and look yourself, you won't find a Bosch one ending in 034 apart from the replacement I mentioned earlier.
Edit: yes there is one for 74 manual 1600 "federal" beetles. But it's just one among many.
Whatever, it's a general term these days and pretty meaningless other than to distinguish it as an SVDA rather than 009 (another generic term used to cover all mech only distributors).

  14. No, Bosch. Can just see the Bosch logo on the left.

  15. Let’s hope there are no other issues with the engine ..

  16. Bosch 0 231 170 034. JK used to sell them.

I believe they were intended as a generic replacement for the innumerable VW 205s (does anyone really need that many types of distributor?)

  17. The engine is still not running right low down just off idle to mid throttle.

I have emailed 123 ignition as I bought from them direct in NL.

Are any of you knowledgable people in Devon or Cornwall as I am heading there tomorrow or soon (can’t stay where I am any longer).

  18. Sounds more like a carb/fuelling problem to me.

Got a reply, as below - so basically 0 or 9 is recommended

  20. At least you've got the advantage that you can easily flip the switch. 1st gen 123s you have to take the dissy out to change it
