The clip doesnt stay put unless you bend the ears together with a pair of pliers. Probably why the old one fell off...

This means that theres probably a seal not quite making contact or a hole drilled for a wire that lets some stinky air through. Use the good weather to leave the doors and tailgate open like they do on the forecourt of garages selling secondhand cars that still smell of other peoples pets and habits...

Fitted a new fuel filter. Looking at my log of things I have done to the bus it looks like it might have been about 45000 miles ago I last changed a fuel filter - but I may have not found the later scrawled record of a change yet, I am sure I have changed it once since I started using them .. Still, probably about 30k miles back if I did it every 10k miles then Halfords stopped selling the filter.

The old filter was fairly clean, some flakes of what looked like POR-15 .. how that got in there I dont know.. but maybe a bit brown on the filter medium - and the inlet side may have had fine rust particles in the petrol, it dripped brownish petrol, clear on the outlet side.
So my guess is that the filter had just blocked with very small rust particles, which I could dislodge for a while by blowing fuel back through the filter.

Yep, the electric cables from the consumer unit, solar panel controller, everything like that, all head down through the floor of the wardrobe into the engine bay. I’ve had the door open all day at work today, so it’s getting better.

  5. A little petrol smell goes along way, when I bought the Bug, the seal on the petrol tank filler cap was perished, but only very slightly, you'd hardly notice on a visual inspection, nevertheless, it made the whole garage stink until I tracked it down.

Having said that, if it doesn't go away, I'd start looking for it, leaving the cap off an empty Jerry can, for example, doesn't make the garage stink anywhere near as bad as it's a limited amount that once evaporated, is gone.

  6. Spoke too soon about not binding . A bit too tight with the case torqued up. Further investigation tomorrow...

I'd fitted a new one, and the ears refused to bend....despite it being hammered into place, on checking ( poking with finger) it indeed fell off!
Found an old one, which fitted better and the ears pinched up great.
Thanks for making me worry and double check!

Any pro riveters know how 3mm diameter aluminium rivets managed to bend 1.5mm thick aluminium L-Angle on application?

Caused a bit of bother with this box and i’ve a few such additions to make. It’s never happened before.

You have slightly crushed the metal with using harder rivets than usual ? Those arent aluminum rivets..

Drove it to work for the first time in months. Managed to end up meeting up with @davidoft in the car park outside, transferred Techenders courier stuff, had a chat.

No problems with fuel feed this time but then apart from a couple of 0-30mph standing starts, and a couple of short hill climbs, there was nothing demanding a lot of fuel. About all I did was got it up to warmish oil and head temperatures.

That's rather... industrial! What are you supplying that needs all that stuff? A small factory?

  14. Advertised as aluminium so should be.
It’s a strange way for the crushing behave.
    Oh well.
    Thanks.

  15. A life time of electrics.
It all seemed reasonable in my head.
Might need a factory to justify it.

Possibly you should have used smaller rivets?

  19. I’ll try that.

I made a gas bottle box similarly but with 1mm L-angle and no issues.

Didn’t even notice it was happening until I took a step back and realised my perfectly cut box had ended up completely wonky.
