The problem is that the ones you can get are so much larger and less bendable...it's almost as if the item was described over the phone to the manufacturer.... and yes, its one of VW's more silly solutions to a problem....I did contemplate a washer and circlip in the groove.

Ah - you mean the the sides bend in at the middle? - your holes didn't line up. :)

Moved out of the field and into the yard in front of the workshop.
Got places to go tomorrow so it's easier having a dry pack up than dealing with the lovely dew we're getting at the mo...

And back on FLA batteries for travelling. We've been living off lithium, coz they're awesome, however Chips charging system is designed around standard batteries.
Was glad of the engine bay lighting...

Because split pins rust out and fall off faster?

Cheap, simple. Drop mild steep pressed clip on pin until lined up with groove in pin. Squeeze. The spring steel C clip that did the same job would need to be brutally hard to get on if it was the same thickness as the horseshoe. Agricultural mindset of brake manufacturers?

Mel's beetle is the same so I guess it's a design that had worked for 30 odd years before the bay?

Spent a great afternoon yesterday at 'L E Went' paint suppliers with @mcswiggs , matching my current paint colours for future patch repairs.

They were absolutely great, spent a long time with colour swatches matching to get it as right as possible. I'd recommend them.

    Not if they are stainless

  8. If it's a good match you should be able to spray in just part of a panel then polish the blended edge once the paint is properly dried

You may have space for half a dozen eggs and a tube of tomato purée on the shelf…for emergencies, obviously.

  11. Jacked Tilly up and placed rear wheels on ramps ready to remove carbs, fire wall and pint lid to renew all breather and filler hoses then underneath to replace all hoses from tang to carbs.
May even remove air boxes on cylinders and air filter to renew vacuum hoses too.
Not in a hurry will complete over a few weeks.

Not as accurate, also a lot weaker. The horseshoe clips are like C clips in fitting in a precise position on the pins. Split pins can crush a bit and allow movement.
And then when you pull with hundreds of kilos of force on the handbrake lever on the shoe and it twists because the lever can lift up a bit because of some slop left with a spilt pin, it could just slice a split pin through.
The shape of the horseshoe clip means when you squeeze it properly, the whole thing wraps round the pin. Just feebly bending the ears is not enough. Doesnt have to leave a gap like a C clip for pushing it over the pin either.

But you always or should require to fit a flat washer prior to the split pin thus keeping it taught .
Even better to have a system where you have a through pin with a nutted end and a slot on the inner side to stop it rotating similar to on trucks of the 70's 80's and probably still do .

Every now and then eBay throws up a little gem.

How about a genuine VW double cab roof canvas

Yes it’s a bit tatty and needs some work but a new one is circa £800 and it wouldn’t suit the general condition anyway. This one was crazy cheap at £40.

It seems to be made of a Barbour style heavy waxed cotton material.

I think I’m going to have to learn to sew to patch it up.

Our bus kettle and electric toaster came from Woolworths in Cowes. £6 each .. Originally used on our boat but now hide in the bus.
