Still under the personal stories there is still a mystery. We are running out of possible reasons why the engines ran hot.

Maybe some wierd oil control valve plungers or springs ?

  2. I have tried do be factual, my chap said the case and machine work was all good, strange about the machining of the thrust main but still all ok. Shame about the heads !!! New cam and lifters should have gone in, would have been cracking then I reckon, the tinware is totally mint and complete. I will probably break now as not sure I can be bothered to spend out on cam, lifters and new head. Be the same money selling in bits. No rush ;);)

Well, there are some angry ex-customers on here who have expressed their (reasonable) anger in no uncertain terms. I don't think it's a bad thing to put a more understanding side of the story for the sake of eventual peace and harmony. I feel I've done that now so I'll stop. I was uncomfortable with the picture being painted of the man.

I would like to know if the flaps bar is not distorted twisted thus creating a total mess of the efficiency of the cooling .
If you just make the assumption that it is right and wack the top tins on ....you can't see them wrong .
Line it up with a correct one ,you never know .

This is pennies. On another forum a nice chap who writes music for TV has paid over e100,000 to some so-called experts to F up building him a soundproof studio. His speakers were e18,000 on top and they're sending him to the shop for nails and making him pay for them. lol
Wow is it difficult not to criticise his judgement and just politely offer my civil engineering experience hoping he'll put two and two together. The acoustic survey and design alone was e15,000 and according to the experts - crud. This company has decided how much profit they will make and worked backwards. They have charged e5,000 to flush mount his speakers but refuse to mount them themselves in case they break them. There is no room to plug the cables in and the speakers point too far apart. It's like two built in cupboards - e5,000!

  7. It never had a stat, bracket or cable fitted, the flaps were fully open. This one never suffered from over heating I believe, valves seized in head on 3 &4. That was replaced by a garage that I don't know. Not the engine builder, The garage over tightened the tappets on already worn hydraulic tappets and that with the worn guides on 1 &2 is about that.....

  8. Not unknown to take a light shave off the end bearing, so long as it doesn’t weaken it too much.

  9. I think its now done as Mains are getting a bit scarce in some sizes, if you can machine case and bearing you might get another go at it.... Just confused me when I measured it, was a bit confused lol.

Bloody back is playing up again Grrrrr

    What!!! Now you tell us.
I thought whole point of this exercise to figure out the overheating engines scenario.

  11. I can only go on what I was told, buy me a new head and cam and lifters and I will rebuild it :) Then stand behind it .................in winter.

I think we may have been wasting your time, sorry about that. Mind your back. :)

  13. I like taking things apart, and hoped to find a reason but, its all still good. Other than the head, cam and lifters.

What was the deck height and compression ratio?

  15. Being a type 1 and not knowing the history apart from the cam rub and gaskit sealer I'm struggling to see what made hot

The cam wear is typical on a Type 4 with hydraulic cam followers and common on any high mileage Type 4. Sloppy job, literally, on the cylinder base sealant but nothing wrong with it as such. And I don’t think anyone has said it ran hot.

The loose fit is typical of CB/Schadek oil pumps and isn’t cured using sealant.

  18. It’s now not running and nosey

  19. Which is why guys like Jake Raby have gone a different route, go for absolutely premium premium parts /best of everything and charge top dollar, only build 4 engines per year but priced accordingly.

That is a picture you could paint of most of the small builders that stay in business I think? Type-4 builders blazed the trail due to the price of parts. Stateside for example. Gone are the days of a Laurie Pettit providing cheap engines - He once sold me a rebuilt 2L for £350!
