My new fuel tank spigot arrived this morning. Got home from the boatyard where I had spent a couple of hours pressure washing my boat.

Had lunch and did the swap of the spigot .

    20200704_195134.jpg

The old one was strange, relied totally on metal to metal seals. The short bit pointed up, the bottom bit was what I attached the hose to.

    20200704_195054.jpg
    What went back in.

Which did not stop the leak. As I put the first splash from the can into the tank, I could hear it running straight out.
It was coming out from round the hole around the spigot where the paint is missing.
    20200704_200020.jpg

So I took the paint tin lid off and found this...I poked it a bit and it came off completely...
    20200704_200257.jpg

    Which led to this...

    20200704_200430.jpg

Drop engine on jack, get firewall out and ask my trained gibbon to fit the fuel hose again...

Which is a JK replacement which could do with being 2cm longer .

I have worked out what happened.. The last time I filled up I was using a fuel pump with a hose that just reached round the bus. I must have twisted the nozzle in the fuel filler and this slid the slippery rubber off the tank. Where I was forced to fit the hose with only a centimetre of overlap with the tank spigot. Which is tapered so once it starts moving its going to fall off.

I have cable tied a few things together to reduce movement.

It took 6 hours including faff with trying to get the fuel filler on the tank a bit more and still have enough at the other end.
Its all back together and running.
    And not leaking.
Basically the expensive rubber hose is not really suitable.

I am going to purchase a 45 degree steel elbow and chop the hose to make it longer.

Shocking state of affairs Mike! There you are having already had a minor engine fire, with your filler hose falling off and your main petrol feed just a rusty stump.

It's all well and good having bio dandy hoses and a funky fuel cut off gizmo but...

I am ashamed. The old spigot was not rotten, it had been creatively modified by a PO. I appreciated the half a filter mesh as well.

But it didnt catch fire again, despite a third of a tank of fuel leaking away inside the fuel tank firewall and then cleaning the gearbox quite effectively on one side..

But I have worked out the long term fix.

I bought a section of 55mm stainless exhaust pipe. I will cut the too short JK hose on its straight section, insert a length of stainless hose and make it 2 or 3cm longer . Then all the joints.will have proper overlap.

It also makes a good location to fit a fuel injection return hose.

Put 25 litres of petrol in it in Tescos and managed to leave the filling station with all of it still in the bus...
Drove it to Southampton to the boatyard.
Petrol still stayed in it even going down hill.

  9. Corrected the passenger door closing using the approved 2 tonne jack technique, attempted to refit the fuse box whilst the battery was connected - that made a few large sparks! - cleaned the dials up and replaced a few warning bulbs, fitted the SS hubcaps and took her for a short test drive. Still sets the smoke alarms off in the garage when I park it though.

Its horrid stuff, got covered earlier and that was just cleaning, never mind refilling with grease!

Bled the brakes. Tiny bit more work in the engine bay to do, new seal, oil, points, etc, then test drive!

  14. Over the weekend I cleaned a stock inlet manifold assembly and sprayed it in high temp paint ( to make it look nice as it was old and a bit beat up). Then drilled and tapped the left manifold for my brake servo. Dismantled and blew through a new 34 pict 3 (copy). I then made a filter assembly using the remains of two cone filters and a 4 inch piece of pipe.
Just need a longer bit of breather hose and I'm all set to run a stock carb for while until I can afford to replace my twins. Didn't think to take any pictures.

Put petrol in and gone to Vale of Pickering campsite.
Weather nothing to shout about, but 1st camp since September last year.
Annoying hesitance when driving, sort of a hunting feeling.
Only thing, engine wise, I've done is fit a good quality ( expensive) rotary fuel pump...but the hesitance is there at any speed, so bit perplexed.

I had a bit of this. Turned out my no.3 spark plug lead had got knocked partly off when I took the engine out and.put it back in again on Saturday.

The other thought is that you have increased the fuel pressure with your new fuel pump and the hesitation is raw petrol dripping down the inlet manifolds messing with the mixture.

Sometimes you have to leave mechanical problems aside for a little while.
I've given these a couple of coats of varnish to waterproof them and I have a plan for upholstery ;) . For now I'm just going to fit them naked! (Go on Bazza)
