  1. That engine runs sweet as a nut. I could even hear your fuel pump overrunning for the official second once you stopped cranking.

    Were you using the Start-O-Matic?

  2. Oh my god!
Tim Flynn is still about and working on VW's!
My dad was Irish too, and I have many fond memories of Tim and my dad, sitting and cursing at an orange 411LE my dad had....fuel injection voodoo! Him and another lady, whose name escapes me, kept all our aircooled vw's going and getting through mot's for years! (the lady did welding....whats was her blimmin name..!)
If you still see him, my dad was a big bald bloke, also called Pat, from Waltham abbey, who rode a bike most places

I don't know Tim but his partner Andy in Antim motors I knew for about 20 years in Enfield. Then we were neighbours for a few years in Hertfordshire. Sadly I heard he died some time after I moved away.

  5. Ah...i didn't know him, to be fair..... My dad passed away seven years ago, aged 82, and in my mind Tim wasn't far behind him, age wise.. I'm probably wide of the mark though, in which case, I'm sorry tim!

I'm pleased with how smoothly it runs and ticks over around 850rpm and yes that relay works :) . The engine guru (Farmer Rob) from the buggy fraternity built it for me. I've got the carbs nicely balanced now but I'm not sure if the mains need to go down a size. There's a bit of smoke but I only ran it for two minutes so hopefully that'll clear.

Ah you spotted my Start-o-matic :)

  7. I think Tim is 77 . I got a couple of stories about Andy yesterday , one involving a blowtorch and singed arm! Tim was moving through the jobs on the van like a good un. I managed to call him Andy once into the bargain.

  10. Sounds sweet, Mark.

I noticed with the magic relay that it does take longer to start my engine after a lay up, turning on the ignition doesn't prime the pump for as long, or even at all, if you have an electronic module fitted in the distributor.

With the fuel pump powerd off the coil, I could turn the key, wait for a few seconds to fill the bowls and away it would go.

What's the start-o-matic, you got a hot start relay that you're energizing with a clip lead, or some such?

Thanks Andrew. Yes it's just that. A little push button in my hand connected to the hot start relay :). Really handy when you want to be a the business end when starting. I just unplug it when done and leave it in the garage.

  12. Thats it! Really Good welder, reasonably priced too!

  13. It won't. At the risk of incurring the wrath of @77 Westy ;): there's absolutely nothing in the relay that would generate an initial priming pulse by design. If yours did it before, likely to be a bit of spurious triggering.

You could make it do it, tho', if you got your soldering iron out...

  14. So was that fake news? I guess it's just a 555 time and relay after all.

You’re making me doubt myself but I was sure that before I fitted the 123 the pump ran briefly as soon as the ignition was switched on, then stopped until the engine was cranked. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, the engine still starts and the pump stops when the engine stops.:)

I’ve just read a post on a Golf forum where the thought was that turning the ignition on caused one pulse from the coil which was enough to make the relay think the engine was being cranked, then it timed out as it would when the engine stops.

Occasionally my pump also runs for a few seconds when I switch the ignition on. I have two bog standard relays, one on starter spade, one on regulator blue. Maybe it's momentarily switched by the charge light voltage on the blue wire from the fusebox end?

  17. I don't disbelieve you, but it must just be spurious pulse from the coil as it's energised. Possibly more common with contact breakers? The fact it doesn't happen with a 123 sort of proves it, as the 123 won't suplly any coil current unless the engine's turning.

You could just add another RC network to hold the 555's trigger input down as the power comes up to the relay. That would reliably give you a priming pulse.

  18. Right, here's your next job Mark, while you're twiddling your thumbs ;)

In with a delay wipe. Pic attached - ignore my colours. Likely easier as you've done your own wiring. Easy peasy. You'll need to:
    - find a suitable fused +12V source to power the relay (I used F10).
    - locate the cable to the slow wiper speed (53) and chop through it in a suitable place. You'll be left with two ends: 53S (which goes to the switch), and 53 (which goes to the motor). These must be connected to the right terminals on the delay relay, or the wiper fuse will pop.
    - fit a delay wipe switch - could be in the wiper switch already, but might not be suitable. A toggle switch will do - Hella do a nice 70s-look one.
    - wire everything up as per diagram.

Done! Delay wipe and a few strokes of the wipers every time you operate the washer pump. What more could you want?

There're loads of VW "19" and "99" relays on eBay for under a tenner. I'd go for a fixed delay, meself. The variable one is so convoluted to set.

Yes, a Pertronix or Accuspark fires the switch transistor once as the power comes on.before it settles down. Its also the self destruct on wire swap feature.

I would consider running a fused wire from the starter motor ignition switch terminal through a diode to the pump power. Or use it to fire a relay across the pulse relay contacts.
Then it comes on while cranking or while the ignition is pulsing.
