I've seen thermostats fail in the closed position ,the operating temp of the engine didn't open the stat. Make sure it works

That is bad the design almost guarantees they fail in the open position

Yeah I no. Imagine that after all that rebuild work/money spent
That cross bar spring... the 1/2 inch tab that is a stopper to create tension for the flaps can break off too, so if the stat fails in the open position, the flaps still wont open

  6. Also the flap over the oil cooler had been removed. As has most of the heating in the van

People remove that one. Stupid? But if the sump heater is a clue they perhaps wanted to minimise oil cooling. You don't want to do that.
The flap when "open" acts as a duct wall to precisely split the airflow between the cooler and the head on that side.

Photos - This forum is very forgiving, You can copy and paste images from anywhere if you can see them on your screen or upload them and select full size instead of thumbnail.
I clicked the little pic on your post so it got bigger in a window, right clicked, copy and paste ...It get big. If I can be bothered, I open MSPaint paste it there, crop the rubbish, select all, copy and paste into post.

If you were using a laptop like me, even when I click on the thumbnails the resulting photo is tiny because of the black bits top and bottom and the way it opens a smaller window to display them. No way to zoom in on them either on the lappy.

Even though that cams well used I can’t imagine it would cause a miss fire or even noticeable rough running

That was the valve seat sinking into the head? I agree the symptoms and the damage first found (cam) that started the strip down weren't the same thing. Valve seat cause found during stripping was the cause? Heh, maybe it was only a bad plug but the damage needs addressing anyway. My westy ran lumpy as a lumpy thing when it was doing the valve seat thing apart from a few miles after I adjusted it each time, then REALLY lumpy when it fell right out.

  14. What makes most sense? I do have the cam ready and looks better than the one currently in there i have also attached the a photo of the lifter that looks badly warn, would that have happened from the sunken valve seat. But I also think if I dont split it there is less change of something going wrong?

  15. I forgot to attach

The cam is knackered James, it will continue to eat itself and followers without doubt. Davidoft must have missed the picture earlier. :)

The old cam is knackered, the replacement looks Well used but not knackered . I think using the 2nd hand followers with the 2nd hand cam is acceptable, make sure there’s no major burrs on everything

The followers must be slightly convex. Two end on end should rock. If they are flat or worn concave they will eat the new cam. They can be refaced if you can find someone skilled enough. My own engine has done 15,000 miles with a 45 year old cam and 45 year old refaced followers. It's all good if your engine builder or machinist knows what he's doing.

  19. I’m going to have to pull the followers on my engine to see if they were refaced in the build.
I know Robert re used my cam as it was in good condition
But the followers were all mixed up in a bag
So if they weren’t refaced then there’s no chance each one is corresponding to it’s original lobe.
If they have been refaced or new fitted do I need to do a high rev cam break in type session to bed the followers in?

I was always of the thought that new followers on an old cam was a recipe for a quickly failing engine?
