Compression issue? Parts and guide to fix

  1. So after many cuts to my hands I have decided not to change my main bearings. Also is there any hidden bolts. I've looked at diagrams I swear I've undone everything but I just can't seem to split it

Above the push rods in the middle down a hole.
tucked under where the bell housing fits.
When you have them all it will split very easily. If it doesn't there's still one or more missed. We all go through this, pesky blighters hide!

That seems to be pics of the one's you found. Straight on the case join would be good rather than sideways - no pics of the bottom yet where they hide in the sludge...

This looks like a sump heater which you'll never need, you might want to get rid and replace with the normal plate. Always wondered why there was a plate there that seemed to have no purpose.

  6. Maybe I have got them all just sealed from all the crap

  7. That sump heater does make for a good handle though

I'm getting tired. Is there any way you can post the pictures full size? I have to cut and past them into another program to blow them up.
There's one oop this hole one side or the other.

Your engine is BTW. Everything you touch must get covered in gritty oil. ;)
Best practice is to clean off the crud BEFORE you take it apart. It's a chore that saves so much agro later.

When you do split it, have it on one side. If you have a workmate, open it up, head studs down between the planks, drip tray under. It won't completely fall to bits in a hap hazard way then, you should be able to carefully lift off a case half. When you rebuild you'll do the reverse.

Could be a bolt/nut here on type-4.
I'm sure there is...Off with the flywheel.

Is the cam actually knackered , you can see without splitting the case

if you don’t need to split the case dont

if you split it for no reason you’re not gonna be rebuilding this engine within your budget be prepared to quadruple your budget

I thought if the thermostat fails it's in the open state so the wire would be slack, when it's cold the wire is taught and as it heats up the thermostat expands and looses the wire and the flaps fall

  14. It will come apart ok once all the bolts are off.. dont try to force it or something will break.. I think Zedders got all the usuals up there.. cant remember who had this difficulty recently but there was a thread.. and dont worry it'll clean up surprisingly well...

  15. Yeah type 4's fail into the safer position , the flaps dont fall out of the way though,, well the left one does but effectively there's a spring on the flaps to open them up... if that's missing too they'll close.. there a nice video by an austrailian bloke that shows it really well...

  16. Yep definitely one there. Be careful when tapping the casing to separate it, use a rubber mallet. DO NOT be tempted to stick a screwdriver in to jemmy the case apart. You’ll never get it to seal again & create a massive oil leak.

TOP TIP for @jameswick89 who I hope hasn't found the last bolt yet. :)

When you do split it, have it on one side. If you have a workmate, open it up, head studs down between the planks, drip tray under. It won't completely fall to bits in a haphazard way then, you should be able to carefully lift off a case half. Fish the lifters out prior or they'll fall out. When you rebuild you'll do the reverse.

That's brilliant thanks for that, so what I was trying to say is correct you don't need to wire anything open because the spring automatically opens the flaps in the fail position
