240 thousand dead in Syria (war initiated and kept going using weapons supplied by Western states, including France) in 5 years. That's 78 deaths per day. not far off the other night in Paris per day, but for half a decade!
I think it's important to remember that incidents like these are highly emotive, and illicit all manner of responses and opinions. We can all agree that the events in Paris and elsewhere are a tragedy. The ramifications are far reaching and the realm of suffering extends ever wider. Celebrate the fact that we are still (relatively) free to express our opinions and offer our support and condolences, such as they are, to the people who have been affected, directly and indirectly. They are no different to you or I, in Paris, Ankara, Beirut, Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere....just ordinary people, wanting a decent life...It's right and proper to question the motives behind such attacks, just as it's right to question those of our own governments. In the interests of peace, tolerance and understanding, I believe diologue is the only solution, however impalatable it may seem. There's a lot to unpick, but until people are made aware of the truth, on all sides, acts of war and vengence will continue unabated. History will testify to this....it's not my opinion.
Too many opinions; not enough time. Too many edits. Firstly - a tragedy Secondly - ANOTHER tragedy Thirdly - a tragedy of a medium size in today's world Fourthly - I am not dismissing the tragedy in any way I listened, this evening, to a programme about France and its history and colonialism and that legacy that may have led to the Charlie Hebdot attacks last year. This programme was recorded for the Andrew Marr Start The Week show last Friday, in Paris, just a couple of hours before the attacks. They thought about pulling the show this week. The French appear to do more critical introspection than we do. It was a great listen. I'll stop now.
Unfortunately Dicky. The terrorists seem to be backed by oil wealth commandeered by ISIS/DASH http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/b8234932-719b-11e5-ad6d-f4ed76f0900a.html#axzz3rhPuGbNd
Its strange how a post about a terrorist attack turns into a dick swinging competition about who can google the best info on why it wasnt such a terrible thing in the bigger scheme of things and how its all ......... whos fault? Personally im still shocked and angry and i know there are others who will be watching who cant believe the clinicality of the approach of a bunch of people who would be the first to hide behind their own men of violence if it came to it. How desensitised are you. Yes, in good time i will see the bigger picture. But not now. Anyone got any good jokes about it they would like to share. That wont be far behind will it, or is that bad taste!
No one, as far as I can see, has shared any jokes onbhere about it. I don't imagine they will do in the future either.
I vote that you and Jez Corbyn go and negotiate with the terrorists if they come to London shooting things up as he doesn't want them shooting eithe http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34840708 And in the interests of balance, the cuts to the police budgets mean there are less armed officers anyway. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34840708 Looks like the UK are leading the way!
And this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34840708 I feel so much safer by surrendering our arms... not.
Keep up, MI6 are getting £2billion and 1500 extra bods. Funny how this sort of cash can be found by merely clicking ye olde fingers? M16 - hmm - with my "trust the gov" hat on these are better than cops. I know for a fact their hands are less tied the nicities that keep normal police the right side of the law so bound to be more effective, but with my "civil liberties" hat on, exactly the opposite. And here we arrive at the age old "if you are doing nowt wrong you have nothing to fear" arguement.
