First bit seems simple enough to do a very basic check of bushes. http://www.ratwell.com/technical/ChargingSystem.html#testalt
If it wasn't getting excited then the light wouldn't go off at all, but I agree, sounds like the alt to me... any service agents near you?
Can't, I've taken it out. I've stripped a knackered one and I can't see how you can replace the brushes (if that's all it is) and get it back together past the sprung out brushes which is a worry.
^^^ Bugger .... Is it worth trying further afield for an altenator - even someone locally has one you could `borrow` ? I just want to see you get out in it Steve - would be a VERY happy christmas for a good few people on here
...and if so, why? Should I put back the alternator? or did the alt break the reg? They've only been paire together on this bus and yesterday was first time with power and alt connected. Just spotted the braid is adrift from, but sitting against the one brush I can see, so i have no choice but to take it apart.
Doesn't mention needing ignition on. So sounds broke Did you mention clicking? Those figures are for an earlier mechanical regulator.
It clicks, it's plastic thing though. Can't be the relays I strapped to them - if either clicked the pump would start which it doesn't.
you can check an alt by connecting a drill to it , spin it up and measure the out put .....speedy Jim is your man on VZI
I've got a ruddy great metal regulator that says on it: Automotive Replacement Parts VRII Volkswagen 12Volts 53 ohms between 2 of the terminals, nothing for the other combinations, the terminals aren't marked but I suspect this is for a dynamo and may not be suitable.
One of the commutator rings is very worn... ...and I don't think it should have that bit of wire wrapped round it either...
