That does look the really cool though mate, Hats off to you

  2. i have noticed the imported buses tend to be in better shape , but how do u define better shape , ie usa buses dont mot so any bit laying around will do the job , pop rivets ,washing machine BITS , a bit of lawn mower etc ETC , if find imported buses rot QUICKER , dry stated buses from dry climates , come to gb , ireland , rot like some one on estEacy for the first time . the moisture here hits them like 3rd deGEReEE CANCER .WITH IN 1 TO 3 YEARs THEY LOOK LIKE THEY BEEN HERE FOR 40 , so any man, women, PERSON , doing any level of retso on a BUS, beetle, any car , MY HATS OF TO YE , now para , think back . a couple of years , when the grass green , behind yours ,and my ears , and many other people ears ,ST PADDYS DAY SORRY OF SUBJECT LOL , and we wear all learning , we all thought we had a rolls royce , o JESUS how we where wrong lol , but if it wasnt for ALL OF US ,how would we learn, so what if some one fills over a seam , stone chips , leaves a blob of weld , what ever , we all learn from EXPERIENCE , thats what where all here for , TO TEACH LEARN AND be iginorant ,
I NO YOUR AN EDUCATED MAN BUT AM NOT , i have no qualifications , no exams , NOT A DOUWLING , but jesus i have GOOD HANDS , so paras take a wee think , wheer not all perfect , people work with what they have and can afford as i NOand YOU NO , rant over cheers U NOi like u ha ha, man of many words lol owen nw

  4. i got a bit bored reading this! if you have the money or the skills then your van will be in a better state of repair. if your on a shoe string it might be a bit of a minger but it'l still be a classic and give you lots of smiles. Im an ogler of all buses and it makes me just as happy to see a botched daily as a mint resto.

Hats off to the detail freaks and OCDers. Im always amazed by what you do.

Its the taking part that counts :) but Paras point was watch what you pay for when your having pro work done.... If you can see a bus is a bit rough thats fine, its not dressed as an A lister and doesnt pretend to be anything but a good honest rusty used survivor thats totaly acceptable and part of being a VW :)

  6. what is an " lister" ive seen quite a few top dollar ripp of so calle d pro restos , that are a shambles , total ripp offs ,price ,quality , there are people on here and other forums that are novices that do 10 times better quality work that the pro s , i take my hat off to them i call them tryers , my kind of people i no trade men dont like this but , come off ur high horses , god loves a tryer , owen nw

  7. Recall getting a bit of a bollockin last year for an MOT bodge on an outrigger.;) I keep my bus on the road-i know whats up with it and when I have the cash I do it meself or get someone to sort it if im not man enough. It s mine and I aint selling it so wheres the harm in the odd bodge. Probably less bodged than some full blown restos!!!

Redoxide - You've some real skill there + good posts above regarding a full resto

Sort of going back to the 1st post and regarding starting with a good bus to start with,

Money, access to decent tools - ie, the luxury of a spot welder, the quality of replacement panels and the extent of rust and previous repairs to the bus at the outset will all determine what is an 'acceptable' standard of repair, for the most part people want honest strong repairs, and a tidy paint job.

I've worked on a van previously painted to the rubbers, where again there was no money to remove trim, renew rubbers, remove windows etc, (and find a load more nasties) As does everyone I hate working for free and although its not nice to know you'e not doing a nice job, when taking on a low rent job this is what should be expected - and these are the jobs you'd sometimes not admit to doing.

As I've said there's loads of bits on mine I'm not happy with - and the photos are in my resto thread for open critism, theres probably too much filler in some areas for some peoples liking, and I've cut bits in all over the place which isn't quite 'Original German Quality' (The most overused phrase amongst part suppliers!) but the metal work is solid underneath. Its sometimes been a battle of spending more moeny or making do and mend, and then sometimes realising I'm not happy with bits and ripping it off and starting again.

  9. seems the so calle d pro s dont lik e was i s being said , ie them that are pros qualifed , me and 95 %of joe public , tryer ie , them that learn from EXPERIENCE , i rest my case . owen nw

I like programmes like American hotrod. Think they're much more honest about the time effort and costs involved. Like paradox says if you pay for it make sure you get what you pay for!
If you do it yourself do the best job you can with the resources available. I know personally after seeing other people's work on here I've gone back and redone parts of my resto that I didn't do well enough when I started out. That includes doing the panel joints properly as I'd previously filled them lol. This meant new panels and a lot of labour. But I'm going to be happier In the long run

  14. no one is arguing , i think i put my points over quite well for some one who was on the beer lol , everyone experienced or not can only do what they can with what they have and with what ever experience or none they have ie , thats why i like it on here . watching what way people do things , as dog says he watched and learnt and went back and redone it , it it doesnt look right to us it might look brilliant the man, women teenager that done it at the time , but as said they will do it better next time , cheers and thanks owen nw lol

  17. Owen it makes a change for you to be hammerd online and not me:thumbsup:

Ive said it before and ill say it again as i think this thread keeps getting taken away from what i intended

Im not having a go at the self taught or just giving it there best try home resto guys

I admire everyone of you for getting stuck in and giving it a go as thats how most of us learn:thumbsup:

Im not having a go at the folks who dont have much money and just ask for a local welder to weld a patch over the top at mot to keep them on the road for another year thats cool by me as it means your out and about living the dream

I was trying to get a sort of list compiled for people using pro restorers of whats not acceptable when your paying out good money for a resto

We have a number of restorers on this board all turning out quality work and im sure not one of them would paint over a part sticker on a panel regardless if it was a quick blow over or a full nut and bolt resto or leave a trail of grinding splatter up the windscreen

What is not acceptable to one may be perfectly acceptable to others.
It's all about budget and expectation.

  19. But surely things like painting over stickers,grinding/welding splatter oversparay on glass, dashboards, seats etc is not acceptable regardless of budget?

  20. Shoddy work like that is never acceptable.
