Theres a few things that get my goat when a bus has been restored Parts such as headlamps and indicator housings door handles etc been masked instead of removing them before paint Panel seams being filled straight over Stonechip being sprayed on the bottom 4 inches of the exterior panels Visable welds not being ground back Overspray on tyres
Sorry Sir Panel seams filled straight over.....when they was as poorly repaired by the PO & this is the only way of hiding them, short of new sides, what does one do? Stonechip sprayed over the bottom 3" & painted over....your not gonna like Gusbus then are you? Comments like this really inspire me to put pics up of our resto, the above comments have for us been hiding panels seams that have not been repaired correctly & we don't have the skill to put new sides in in making them straight..over to you batman!
Appologies marc i should have worded that better I should have said whats not acceptable in a Professional resto Anybody at home having a go and doing the best they can with what they have gets a big thumbs up from me Ill ammend the thread title
Top tip for making the seams look good on poor repairs is to glass fibre over them then wrap some wet n dry around a steel rule and cut the seams into the fiberglass
hmm ok, fair enough!! yes in a professional restoration, they will have pullers etc to ensure the panels look bob on! I have a rather cunning plan for the sides, which will cover up the filled seams
Overspray on windows. I once got my van back after a repair and spent ages razoring the overspray off the inside of the side windows.
Its a funny one, putting up 'Resto No No's' will offend alot people on here as theres a sizeable chunk of ugly work going on aswell as the good. Some of my own stuff I'm not 100% happy with, but theres a few times I try not to comment when I see something that makes me go 'Really?? Stonechip on the bottom 2/3" of bodywork I dont have problem with, as all classic shaped Porsche 911's were done this way, all helps to slow down the rot! As you've asked... my biggest hate on restos tho, is blobby mig welds showing in the door shut/b post/when replacing a front arch, difficult to grind down, so more often than not are left!
I get where Paras coming from ... Of course I would never have enough cash to send my bus anywhere for professional treatment ,even though the pickup is a wreck, I do like it like that,honest... Over-spray on the wheels and glass is the least of my troubles... we did have a car repaired accident damaged and the colour did not quite match ,I was upset for about 5 minutes ,then scatched it again putting the trailer on...
I'm not a 'fan' of any of the above, with the exception of the stonechip on the bottom to my mind it should line through with the sills. Sorry Mark i don't like the filled panel seams either, but also agree that as long as its a solid repair then the finish is down to the owners preference, and some folk go out of there way to smooth a bus over so thats just another case of thank god we're all different innit Over spray on tyres? guilty! mostly coz i'm a div!
I want my bus on the road, you know what that all that matters to me! As far as professional resto go, I'd expect it as original as surely they're gonna charge the earth for their, mmmnnn expertise? (Quick edit..... I'd just like to say that I saw a so called professional job at work once with a trowel and filler! Be happy with what you can do and that you can keep your van on the road to enjoy. )
Agreed^. I have a thing about painting with windows in. Ive only painted one car in my life, about a year ago, an old renault 5. And my dad insisted on windows in because he couldnt be arsed to take them out. I cant imagine doing it again, just doesnt seem "proper" The way i see it, if your goingto do it, you might as well do it right. Obviously theres exception though like money/time restraints.
My intention of the thread was not to offend anyone especially anyone doing there own work After all there are things that im not 100% happy with ive done on my own bus It just seems to me a fair few people are paying so called proffesionals to restore there bus and not getting a restoration in my eyes Fair play if they just want a quick tidy up The idea of this thread was to arm people with what generally is acceptable and what is not when it comes to a proffesional restoration So when there choosing a restorer or collecting there bus from restoration they can decide if the standard is whats normally acceptable or if they have been mugged I suppose ive opend a massive can of worms here
