what would be your "perfect" type 4 engine for a camper?

  1. Anyone over here had one of them. I read the blurb and sometimes just wonder how much difference there is.

  2. Just because i like it the most,,,enough power,,good mpg and fast if you need to be fast

Oh please, you've met my wife!
I'm ready to go now! Right now, in fact I've just checked the tyre pressures haha.
Always keep a spare pair of pants secreted just in case.
However, believe it or not we are sat here, Monday evening, discussing what meals we are likely to fancy next weekend.
    There's preparation and then there's @Mrs Busmonkey !

  4. From the raby site its about 100 bhp and 125-135 lb ft, so not a fire-breather but a good increase over stock with a flat torque curve. Stock capacity so the increase is down to heads, cam i guess - Zed's 2.4 has similar power and more torque..

I don't think anything has been done to mine except electronic ignition. I like the idea of things being original. It's an old bus, it starts, it goes and it's not a sports car. So what? I love it!

  7. Personally for me you don't need massive CC .. Modern stuff is getting smaller CC but more BHP and torque .. A decent spec 2.0 with modern Fuel injection with mappable timing or slap a SC or turbo on it ...Porsche heads or 16valve

  8. My dream type 4 engine would look very much like a Rover V8.

  9. Even my 7-seat transporter struggles with some hills when fully laden - I've had every seat full with 6 adults and a 2-year old in a car seat, even climbing 200 feet in half a mile I was down to 2nd gear by the end. On my own, I'm in 3rd and passing 40mph on the same stretch of road. I'd hate to think what it would be like over Parley's Canyon fully loaded - a climb of 26oo feet in 13 miles.

  10. I'm secretly planning an ex Mazda rotary lump c/w a CVT gearbox.

  11. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Some of us prefer vw cranks simply because they're proven quality, you know they're balanced and they're cheap. :)

  12. &rob.e just add fuel injection and either a turbo or a supercharger, with modest boost you should hit those figures with your 2 litre

Or you could be really adventurous and fit both

  13. It's much scarier driving a bus at low speeds on the motorway with big lorries passing you, than it is doing 70mph.

I usually do 70 ish on motorways, recently I went in convoy, to bug jam, with loads of vws doing 50 ish. It scared the hell out of me, after less than one motorway junction I left the convoy and went at my normal speed.

I dropped off a bit of furniture at the misses house, had lunch and then met them at the show. Far more relaxing

  15. But you missed the convoy experience.

  16. When's the SC trial going to be running? The EFI runs nicely on its own, hopefully with the boost yours will be great.

  17. Nothing to lose by trying a set of decent twin carbs on your current engine first.

Any beffier engine you may want in the future would need big carbs anyway

  18. You can't really talk to people in other vehicles on convoy, without a cb radio.I spoke to them all face to face at the show
