here's an idea @Silver - rebuild this GE as standard to get some practice, give it to me and you can have mine to do your 2nd one on.

That's actually a very sensible suggestion....apart from the 'give' bit.:)

  3. I've got the same problem. With the addition of low attention span, no experience and no desire to teach myself. :)

Today's update. Got it stripped right down this afternoon, but can't split the case. I'll order the appropriate tool in a bit, unless anyone has a tip for doing it without one.

The heads look spot on. Valves look ok, no pulled studs and came apart easily.

Found a couple of small scratches under the oils seal, not sure if they'll cause a problem with the new seal.

Pistons look in good condition, no scoring and all the rings are intact. Is the discolouration normal? They all look slightly burnt!

Inside the case, same colour as the pistons.

Possible new piston and barrel set, what do you think about these @Paul Weeding? Any good? Suitable?

  6. Barrels and pistons should be good for 200 k clean them up , new rings ,good to go

I'll keep them for another time, I'm planning on going up to a 96 mm set in the link above.
I guess the colour is normal then?

  8. The colour is blow by... Good sign that the rings have gone slack and aren't doing their job properly any more!!

And those AA piston and barrel kits are my usual choice, unless I'm doing a full on blueprinted motor, and then I go with the Keith Black pistons :)

  10. Too for AA
    :)

  11. One thing to note with the AA pistons is that they usually have a cut in the top for high lift valve clearance... This goes to the bottom of the cylinder which then completely contradicts the arrow pointing to the flywheel on one side of the engine...

Thanks Paul, remind me again of this fact when I have the bits in my hand...I will forget by then:)
