When my van had F.I. i took it up to 85 with out any proplem and cruised arround at 70 quite happy. Then i fitted some twin dells DRLA's. Same sort of speed but it feels a lot more frisky. It may sound a bit daft to people who drive propper fast cars, but i find my van is most fun on twisty B roads, flicking between 3rd and 4th. It pulls really well from 40 up to 60. Mrs. Vinnyboy aint happy sitting out on the right hand side though >:D

  3. Yes ,
know what you mean Vinny boy, my wife keeps going for the pedals on the right hand side.....quite amusing ;)

  4. Yes Zed, we were.

Thinking about it, up and down the hills, long péage autoroutes and local D road routes would have given the engine enough of a baptism. What do ya reckin?

Not to go over 30!!!! That's barely ticking over!!!

The worlds gone mad. You did the right thing Tiny

  9. Hit 90 on the way back from brands hatch yesterday. Didn't stay there long though.

1600 Tp with 32/36 weber with homebrew airbox fed from original oil bath cleaner modded to increase size of cold air intake, empi twin rustpak exhaust .

Bus has belly pans front roofrack and devon poptop. Lowered 10cm running on empi alloys.

Cruise 67 on GPS indicated 75. Easily gets to 75 on GPS speed which is 80 indicated. This was very scary when the bus had loose drag link.

Hits 55 in third up hill.

Goes up hills on motorways at over 60 - will accelerate gently from Fareham going east on M27.

What limits in the end is high temperature - doesnt reach max until about 20 miles of motorway.

Fuel economy about 18 mpg and improving with carburettor rejetting tweaks.

One of the most surprising improvements was chopping about 4cm off the air cleaner cold intake

  11. My T2 has a 1600 Brazilian engine and really it doesn't sound happy past 50. Like I should go to 5th when I haven't got it. So I stick to that speed. If pushed I'd turn the music up even louder so I wouldn't hear it but having only recently got Violetta up and running nicely I'm preferring to keep it that way.

  12. Oh just to add I did a 168 mile round trip recently, half of it motorway, averaging about 45-50 mph and got 28 mpg. I wasn't expecting that but I'm very happy.

Also I bought the van to physically and mentally slow me down. To make me take my time and learn to enjoy the journey. Some of my favourite times are when she's broken down because as a result of them I've met some really lovely people. On one of my busiest days I was forced to just sit in the sun and wait for help and not do all the things I'd committed myself to do. I now call these my VW moments and when they happen I look for the bonus that comes with them. Makes me happy anyway.

  13. I regularly drive at speeds in excess of 180 mph. I've never been caught and the van seems happy at these speeds.

The little yellow tablets do seem to have influence on this though.

50 to 55 max in our humble 1600, but that suits us. We're happy to pootle along.... I use the speedo on the satnag tho, cos our tiny teeny alloys make our dash speedo all wrong ..... must get rid of the pesky blighters n get some steel down there where it belongs....

  15. we nearly cooked our 2.0 type 4 doing 70mph for prolonged periods. I think the carbs are probably imbalanced, but she seems very happy sitting at 50mph all day long.

  16. Get it looked over o_O really doesn't do engines any good ignoring things!!

  17. 65is tops for me probably would go faster but caravans get in the way on the 303 but at least I can keep ahead of the HGVs

  18. With new carbs on my 2.0l and my heavy right foot... Got to about 80 on the GPS before I lost my bottle....
Usually cruise around about 55 to 60.... Its the journey not the destination....

55-60 for me. Got her up to 70 when I first got her (downhill with a tailwind) but didn't feel right and isn't good for the little 1600 engine we've got.

  20. Hi guys,
I think the 2ltrs sit nice at 65 - 68mph without feeling that your pushing it. A good strong motor would be able to cruise all day at that and will go up & down hill at the same speed .
The 1600 t/p I've drove can stuggle up the hills compared to the 2ltr and sit nice at 55 - 60mph.

Most UK Westies were 1600 t/p due to the fuel prices in the 70's whereas most euro models were 2ltr because the fuel was cheaper! Imagine, 75p a gallon!

    OUTRAGOUS prices!
