  1. Hi all,
well, we finally had our first proper trip to Bertie's first ever show which was the 1st Busfest ( still cant get used to that name )...had a great day with the family as it was the first time they had come up with me.

With this being our first ever Bay and never having driven another one to compare it to ... can you guys give us some idea of what speed yours does?.........I took it steady as this was the first longish run and the heads were new and i suppose need to be run in etc, its a 2ltr type 4 engine and seemed to go along nicely, top speed sort of 50-55mph .... climbing the hills nicely - pretty much staying in 4th and just the odd change to 3rd on the steep long drags, does this sound about right?
    Cheers
    Lee :)

...kids enjoying icecream and having a warm next to the engine on the trip back on Sunday... when it was a little colder than the beautiful Saturday sunshine.

  2. std 2l should pull to about 90mph, cruise at 65/70 all day long

won't tell you what mine will do... well would do, as it isn't a std engine, and I don't know what it'll do on the new box yet

  3. got molly up to just over 60 the other day without realising going down hill, she could have probs gone faster too but i eased off as i don't really wana go over 55...

she has a 1600, so yours could probs go faster if you pushed it but i'm comfiest about 50-55 so in my opinion you're doing good, others will disagree maybe but i think whatever your van feels comfortable in and you will know when you're driving what feels right :)

so keep on being happy! the kids look happy :) x

  4. I usually sit at around early 70s in mine but it transpires my speedo is a little optomistic. and thats actually around 65 so on the way home from busfest I upped the anti a bit and sat at 75 (actually 70). Im running a 2 litre Viking (with trailer at the weekend) its standard with a single weber progressive but will be sporting dells when i gets around to it!

  5. ...should i be worried about something then Paul????.................thanks Tiny, i was happy with 50mph as i'm still getting used to driving it, kids love it as we camped just down the road from the show on sat night , sunday morn they were feeding the campsites duck which is always good for a giggle.

  6. aww :) see happy times in busses is what life's all about! xxx

i can get Rhubarb up to 75 easily if i want to but that's way too fast for me - 1600 tp btw

  14. 85 up a slight hill in our 1600 although i normally stick to 60 and save fuel

sat nav speed reading, although the speedo was close

  15. I think they are a few optimistic speedos here. When driving a 2 litre almost everyday, with the engine in tip top condition, often for well over 10 hours per day, over an 18 month period, 11 - 12 years ago in Australia, I found that anything over 65 became a bit too much of a struggle if you were permanently at that speed. Anythng over 65 and you certainly began to feel that the engine was being pushed. Most other folk I met out there, in 2 litres, doing long distance stints would stick more at 55 to 60, as is the case for folk I know in the UK running 2 litres. Yes, you could take it up to 80 (slightly more down a hill) but that would be thrashing it. I haven't ever seen a VW-powered bus in the UK on the motorway doing more than 70 (you could hear the engine close to full-pelt as you past it). I'd say the average is 60. With your engine, I'd say a comfortable motorway cruising speed is 65 once you've got the heads run in.

I once managed to get me 1600TP unto 110 up hill fully loaded

Then I woke up covered in sweat, I have no idea of the top wallop on mine as I never go more than 60, 55 most of the time. If you look at the difference between the two over a long run, cut out one coffee stop and they are about the same.

i've been 80, didn't like it, i then limited myself to 70, but after finding my shocking mpg i try to drive a bit more like i do when i follow malc at 55-60 and it's a lot more enjoyable.

  20. We've got a T4 2l engine. We generally go at 55 maximum, but it's easy to creep up to 60 (I get told off ...). We've got up to 70-75 going downhill, but that was a bit too scary. Anything over 55 just doesn't feel right - anything faster seems too noisy, and the gale through the gaps in the passenger door gets too cold as well! We just allow extra time for travelling, and it feels better just pootling along at that speed. Oh and we use the speed showing on the sat nav, rather than the van's one...

Glad you enjoyed your first proper camping trip :) that's what it's all about - not hurtling along roads!!
