  2. Fixed the dodgy connection on my reversing light switch - 2 new space connectors and everything is fine!

  3. Moved it out of the way to do some serious tree lopping.

    Had a productive night.

A while back @3901mick kindly gave me a Bosch type 4 alternator with unknown history. Back in July my Dad put new bearings in, the brushes looked good with little wear, we figured it would be good to go.

We wanted to run the motor, on reconnecting the battery the alternator started shorting out and making funny noises - turns out an insulator on one of the diode wires had split and the bare wire was shorting. Replaced the insulation, popped the alternator back in. Sorted, charging exactly as it should, no sparks or anything.

    Result :D

Took him for a twirl into town parked up on the pier and couldn't resist this shot with castle Cornet in the frame.

He did do stages 1 to 4 over those parts.

I did the poptop. It was a little dull. I decided to do stages 1 to 4 on one half only in an infomercial type stylie

On Saturday.. replaced one inlet manifold boot as it had cracks in it. Found some loose connections in the stereo so the subwoofer amp is back on line.
On Sunday drove it up to Slough Swapmeet and met a few TLBers
Bought a new windscreen seal which is what I needed.
One NOS rear light lens and a Hella one where a numpty had painted the reversing light lens with black spray paint.. nail varnish remover and a Stanley knife has got rid of almost all of it. £25 the pair.
A couple of Beetle door locks .. rusty but the little coil springs on the pop up latch stalk are still good. So I can fix my drivers door lock.
And a steering wheel with fewer cracks in the boss than my current one for £10.

  15. On Saturday I opened up the firewall and replaced all the breather joints. I cleaned up the panel and gave it a couple of coats of paint.
Then I replaced my cracked fan with a new one from vwh. Looked to be a good match. Question: when I took the old one off, there were shims behind the fan and a wavy washer in front before the big nut. Is this correct? I had to use a couple more shims to get the clearance right. The shims were the same as the dynamo ones.[IMG]

  16. Pic shows the bits/order. Not very clear, Bentley has a better one as I recall. Shims necessary so the fan clears the shroud without scraping.

  17. Down to Wickes to get another couple of fence posts, then took him for a trundle down the A303 in the nice cool air. He just burbles along :).

Made mental note to tweak idle mixtures down a bit, as exhaust stinks and fuel gauge appears to be connected to the speedometer...

That's clever, does it give out miles to the gallon?@snotty

  20. Almost . They'll be tweaked. Should also make the engine run at bit hotter: 80º on a run isn't enough!
