And he’s a dodgy footballer; surprised he didn’t fall off the bottom step of the ladder and roll around for 5 minutes!

Replaced Brazilian rear light lenses for the fourth time in seven years with one NOS German and one used OG Hella I bought at Slough.
Cleaned up the bulb holders and painted the insides of the light fittings white as Brazilian ones dont have reflectors.

Looked at where to fit bits of the FI .. warm up regulator and auxiliary air valve need to be bolted in.

Took out the drivers side lock cleaned it up put in the little spring on the lock pull mechanism I raided off the scrap Beetle lock I bought at Slough.
Put it back together then one of the window rubber clips fell off. So I pulled out the rubber and opened it out replaced some more clips put it back. Now the drivers window shuts properly. So I did the same for the passenger window as well.. blasted Brazilian mechanism drops down by itself when you slam the door. So I moved the winder round so gravity helps it push the window up.
The OG ones have a clever lock that operates as you let go of the winder handle and it springs back a bit. That stops the window dropping.
The Brazilian one doesnt work as well even though its 30 years younger.

  3. On Saturday I checked my plugs. A little rich and the gap had closed up slightly. Then I set about reassembly, and with the help of number 1 son, manoeuvred the beast back in place. He's getting a dab hand at VW engine removal/refitting, and he's only 12! I'd like to say "start em young" and all that, but once the engine was back in he said "can I go now?".
So the only thing stopping a restart now is the exhaust gasket fell apart when I took the exhaust off (merged header system). I begrudge paying 8 quid for a new one to do the same. Any suggestions on making gaskets?

  4. If it's the triangular one onto the silencer, a thick smear of Gun Gum will do the trick, and work better than Chinese cardboard...

I never undo that joint and use home made annealed copper gaskets on the cylinder head ends of the exhaust. You could probably do the same for that joint - 1.6 mm copper sheet off ebay.

When I put back the brake light bulbs the Brazilian bulb holders are so horrible the bulbs can easily turn 90 degrees too far shorting tail light circuit to brake light circuit...
Then some lights come on when you turn on the headlights but amusingly instead of lighting the brake lights, putting your foot on the brakes turns the ignition on.
I noticed this when I stopped the bus at the station and decided to turn off the ignition with my foot on the brake and the engine carried on running.

All fixed now. Checked in the dark with the reflection of the tail lights on the white garage door.

Couple of smaller jobs today before work.

Fitted some Securon inertia reel seat belts to the driver and front n/s passenger seat.

Need to find a matching static belt for the centre bench.

Cleaned up the filthy (but original) flexible heat pipes I found on eBay. These are the big ones that fit between the heat exchangers and the metal ‘Y’ piece. Will have a crack at fitting these at the weekend.

Fitted an original card glovebox liner.

  12. Noticed my driver's side door button has become too stiff for the central locking motor to pull it down. Should've cleaned and lubed it.

Decided I would rather saw my own leg off than take the door card off again. It can wait till spring.

Drove it for miles and miles on the M27 at 10mph because of traffic jams. Then spent 45 minutes driving 3 miles from the motorway . Because of all the Southampton inhabitants who find it quicker to queue for half an hour to rat run into Southampton than go down the A roads into town.
