Anyone out there know where I can get a replacement spring for my Sopru Pop Top Roof? Mines an Ausie import and Sopru were the approved VW converters over there. My roof lists to one corner when it's up and I can see a PO has attempted to shorten the spring, unsuccessfully, to apply more tension. Any help appreciated, and if someone is going to Aus add this to the shopping list
I may well be able to help you with this. It's a long story but the roof of my bus came off all on it's own. The specialist garage who carried out the repair had to get lots of the mechanism specially made. I remember when I picked the bus up the guy told me they had needed to have.the springs made to order from a spring manufacturing company. He was moaning because the company refused to make one or two and insisted that they ordered 10. I can't see that they would have used all the spare springs so they may well have some of the exact springs you need. If you want I'll dig out the garage's address and phone number. This is my pop top after the repair so you can see if it's the same as yours.
Sydney, I've got the same roof (presumably so have you), give sparks marine a call based in Oxford they did mine without the scene tax and was under 500.
Thanks all, I'm just going to measure up as it looks the same as Sandybay's but not certain on the lengths . I have found them on here http://caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=436 but they don't do international delivery! So, thanks for the offer Terrordales I may need to take you up on that.
allibus3 I've found the details. John Newman Bodywork 8 Mill Hill Gamlingay Beds 01767 650797 or 10767 650597 It was last year so you may need to jog their memory. Hope this helps
Quick update - none at the garage, they can't remember what they did with them......... G'Day Kombis may have but they usually raid old parts and, due to the lack of them, have gone over to a gas strut mechanism; now that sounds interesting! They will look and get back to me. I'll give it a few days, and if not I think it's buy from Oz time!
Oh sorry the garage didn't have any. They had ten made I think as that was the minimum order. Whilst I was hunting for mine I came across the gas struts that G'day combies use. I considered it for a while but in the end decided that it would spoil the look to have four gas struts inside the canvas. I insisted that the garage repair like for like and that's how come they had the springs made. As you have a contact in Australia that may be the route to go if you want your van to stay original.
Razzyh as long as you've got enough for allibus then I'd like some as well. 6 please if you have enough of them.
I've got loads as needed em for mine so had to buy in bulk. You can pm me your address and if you gift paypal payment to rayhelmke@btopenworld.com. I only changed the bottom 3 didn't bother doing the top as mine were fine.
Cheers, I'm just going to keep them as spares for now but if I don't have them sods law says they'll crack up and break. I'm off out now but I'll do the paypal thing tomorrow.
