1800 Type 4 AP Code = mild lift cam (almost stock) twin Dell'Orto 40mm carbs with stubby manifolds, flamethrower 2 coil, 8mm Taylor Spiro leads, 009 dizzy and accuspark electronic ignition. It has J-tubes and a stock zorst at the moment.

70 bhp which is only 2 up on VW even with the carbs - i'm hoping for a bit more from an exhaust

It''s a T4 2,4L. in my camper, 151bhp. Drives like a modern car ++

2.3 type 4... stroker crank for lots of torque, and a few other choice parts

the inside from when i was giving it a check over, and swapping out the web 86a cam for a 86b

Do you guys build them youselves or get an engine builder to do it? Once my van is up and running properly, I want to build a bigger capacity T4 engine - currently 1.7.

I think Holmsen built his, and I'm an engine builder... i just don't do volumes of engines at the moment

choice wise for you is pretty simple... you could stick with pretty stock internals and take your capacity up to 1911cc, or you can think about swapping out your crank for a stroker like mine, and take it up to a 2270, or bigger...

all depends on what you want, and how much you can afford to spend

my last build.. a 2l, but modded up to a slightly better spac than the 914 2l

and the exhaust system that i made for it..

I had a 2 liter stock engine if that's what you mean.
I 've used the same guy for all my engines, first one a 2056ccm, best i ever had, the 2,4 that's in my camper, and Losen's engine, the 2,9 liter

I fitted twin CP solex carbs. The performance improvements were massive over the unreliable workings of the FI system.

If you had to guess, how much more horsepower do you suppose this gained you?
Did it lower your fuel consumption at all?
Does the engine sound any different?

The power output is supposed to be the same as the AFC FI system. Economy is better or on par. As for sound it lost its little Herbie whistle it used to have but I can live with that as I whistle when I rev the engine.

So now the key for me to gauge your massive performance improvements lies in figuring out what AFC means. Assuming it's not the Asian Football Confederation, Google was useless.
