  2. Can't remember offhand. I have them written down somewhere. They are as suggested in the Dell super performance book for a 1584. I know it's a good setup as I've run these carbs on my beetle and my other bus in the past.

  3. I'd thought about ratio rockers but stopped at the carbs and the exhaust. Doing this has cost me nothing as it was stuff I had stored away.

  4. It will be interesting to see the after result:thumbsup:
    Headwork next?

  6. Right...update.

Took longer than anticipated today (needed to source new fuel lines) so missed out on my follow up rolling road. Hoping to go tomorrow but the place isn't running the RR on a Saturday.

Set up the carbs etc, checked the idle, linkage etc etc and it's running a treat. Went on a brisk 40 mile round trip to shake it down. Going to retune in the morning.

So far? Idles lovely. Tiny stumble coming off idle when cold (no choke). Revs cleanly and certainly feels different. Much less changing down (kept going for 4th but being already there).

There's a slight blow somewhere on the exhaust to investigate tomorrow.

We're off on Monday so I'll have to wait for the next rolling road for a couple of weeks.

Just replaced a wheel bearing as there is a slight grumble down there. I was hoping it was the alternator bearing I could hear but it's still there.

Away to get the wheels balanced tomorrow as well.

    Busy busy!

  7. Which carbs are you running?

  8. Weber 34 ICT's Type IV 2ltr - standard exhaust.

  9. Right... I fitted the carbs and exhaust 3 weeks ago and have done around 900 miles since.

    Ran very well indeed all up the West coast fully laden and up and down hills a plenty;

The carbs nor linkage required no adjustment, the exhaust needed re-sealed at the heat exchanger on one side due to a small 'blow'.

I'm away into the garage in a minute to give the van the once over before returning to the rolling road tomorrow.

    Any last predictions?

I'll video the van on the rollers...just in case it blows up ;-)

  12. Come on Paradox...give us a specific prediction ;-)

  13. I'm not sure I want to watch...it's quite alarming to see!

  14. Yeah rather you than me. I'll just be happy to get mines to drive up the street :D

  16. Hmmmm.

A strange experience! Van driving great, took it to the rolling road. The guy who ran the test was off today but the other chap who assisted took charge. Did a 'repeat' run on the 'puter to compare before and after.

    Sounded great on the rollers....

    Result?

    45.4 bhp :-/

    0.3 bhp increase?

Power at wheels - 27.8bhp!! LESS!!!

We did lots of head scratching and some more tests. Very odd indeed. Waiting to hear back from first tester (Andy) to see if we can fathom out what's going on.

Grant said he was looking for around 60bhp (optimistic I thought) and the way it was driving on the rollers he was confident of a good result.

Perhaps I'll go back and Andy will be able to shed some light on the anomaly. Fact remains is that the engine IS is more powerful and pulls better on hills even when fully loaded, idles lovely and accelerates smoothly without hesitation.

    Who knows what's going on!!!!

I shrugged it off and spend the afternoon working on my 1970 beetle. They are interested in putting the 2.1 with DRLA 48's destined for the bug on the rolling road. Let's hope it manages to make more than 50 bhp!

  18. Was the fuelling/jetting correct on the carbs?

  19. They are as suggested for a 1584cc in the Dell Super-performance book. No stutter, idle excellent, no stumble, pulls smooth and strong, timing spot on, runs cool, plugs 'biscuity'!

All suggesting everything is as it should be.

I was at the rolling road purely out of curiosity. If I had any symptoms of ill running/felt flat/couldn't pull up hills etc I'd understand but it's running a treat!

Really weird! I'm hoping we find the handbrake was on for the duration of the test! ;-)

  20. I've done 900 miles on the modifications. Only thing I had to sort last night pre test was a cracked dissy cap.

Perhaps I'm imagining the improvement in performance! Hey ho!
