Rolling road; before and after investigation.

  1. I don't think you're deceiving yourself. Getting rid of a single centremount carb is going to improve things on its own by letting the engine breath better. Maybe something not right with the second RR results?

  2. At least the van drives better than the RR results ...be worse if it came out at 70bhp but drove like a bag of spanners!!

  3. I'd just drive it and enjoy it. If it pulls ok and your plugs are the right colour, it's fine!

  4. Agree...but it's still niggling me. I like answers to questions and solutions to problems!

  5. Well, you've done the second part ;).

  6. If I hadn't been driving past the RR on my way to fit the stuff i'd be blissfully unaware and waxing lyrical on here about how great the modifications are.

    Ignorance is....

(Although I still think the second session was duff!)

  7. There wasn't really a problem before starting this other than a pair of carbs and a shiny exhaust sat on a shelf staring at me in the garage :)

  8. You can now become the VW Guy Down The Pub..."I fitted Dell FRDs and a blue coil, and I reckon I'm getting 110hp at the wheels..."

PS You're not alone...I've had a pair of Dell DRLAs sitting in the garage for about 4 years now.

  11. Cheers @Mucka. Round the coast tonight to have dinner at the beach. Came back and pulled a spark plug again. Spot on.

Still driving great. Been back and forth today to RR guys. They're as puzzled as me! They had their demo car on the rollers to make sure everything is ok and it is.

I think I'm going to have to go back just to put this to rest :)

Your jets etc are the same as mine and exactly as as specified and supplied with the kits from new btw.

What about the venturis? The bigger they are, the further up the rev range goes the power. Maybe yours are too big or are they also 27mm?

  13. Everything is 'factory' spec (same as @Mucka wrote and same as in the Dellorto superperformance tech book. There's plenty if power from idle. It's not like a Porsche but it pulls well considering it's still 1584 and the size/weight if van it's pushing!

  14. I'm going to do a compression test and see if that sheds any light on it.

Have you got standard wheels and tyres on ? on such a small powered engine bigger or smaller wheels and tyres will affect the true registered performance

  16. Alas, everything is the same as the pre test except the carbs and exhaust.

  17. you're making it up and just trying to save face, you know the bus is slower but won't admit it. I guess your wife is on your shoulder watching you type so you have to make out that the £600 + of 'just old stuff gathering dust in the garage' upgrades actually worked, just keep blaming it on the RR and move on. We'll all have forgotten about it come the week-end
    :)

  18. Not sure how to take that @Joker

I'm not here to bleat or complain. I started this post as I thought the results would interest others. I'm not new to all this Vw stuff :)

I enjoy discussion about VW related stuff with likeminded folk. Simple.

  20. yeah its good to read too. My clues are in the smiley face and user name btw :)

Its nice to see someone with the balls stick their bus on a rolling road - its scary stuff standing 2 feet from the engine as someone thrashes the nuts off it!
You'll likely find as @zed has said, there is something in the set-up which has shifted everything to the right. Have they offered you a re-run just to confirm the numbers? What i'm thinking is if those numbers are right you're possibly mistaking the smoother twin carb driveability and different noise with a power increase - what i'd be concerned with is whether you're now running at higher revs than before but with the same output and whether you're now running hotter or not?
    :)
