  1. I've used oneshot grease, the same stuff land rover front swivels use.

  2. bad idea

  3. Indeed it’s not something I would do

    Nooo :(

Grease acts as a suspension for debris / metal particles which turn into what is effectively grinding paste and causes undue wear.

Using the correct hypoid grade of gear oil means that any debris will sink into a recess, which the steering boxes have taking the debris away from the worm gears.

  5. I've not used it on my bay as i've never had the need to top it up but my bug has semi fluid NLGi 00 grade grease (which is what steering box oil and one shot is) spec'd in the manual and handbook for my year.

Where’d you get the plastic clips for that pipe? It looks similar to the brake reservoir to MC pipe clips which I couldn’t find anywhere. Only had one of them so had to use a jubilee clip for the other end.

  8. There the original ones still on the van when I bought it

The clips and the seals are the same as the ones on the upper to lower reservoir pipe.

It's looking more and more like you might drive that soon... keep it up!

Hopefully tmw I can put the rear of the van in the air adjust the shoes then connect up the handbrake cables.
After that it’s getting some quotes from Shipley to get it transported.

  13. Where's it going Para? Saw that your landlord wants it gone.

  14. It’s off to a farm about ten miles away

  15. Shame. That'll make it a bit more difficult to just pop out and do a bit. :(

  16. Yeah it’s going to make things a lot more awkward

Still it’s better than having to sell it.

  17. Hey Para, just caught up on your thread since I last dropped by. Glad to see you're still cracking on despite just about every possible force trying to stop you from finishing it! To see the brakes going back on suggests you're getting close to being roadworthy, It'll be such a serious achievement when you're done to see what you managed to get through.

Sounds like a serious pain that you've had to move off site, is it in a shed or outdoors?

Do give me a shout if you need a hand with any jobs.

  18. It does feel like some dark force is trying to stop me finishing it at times.
    No worries though
I’ll either finish it or it will finish me

Unfortunately it’s going to be outside at the farm but at least it’s somewhere to put it.

Thanks for the offer of help and the same goes for you if you ever need any help or want to borrow tools etc.

Do you still have a Media blaster? as I’ve a few bits that if I could get them blasted would save me a chunk of time.

  19. That's a shame, but at least it's safe, and noise won't be a concern. I've upset some of my neighbours with the angle grinder, though I must admit they have been very patient with the amount of work I've been doing!

    Yeah I have a shotblaster, it's a 100l tank setup, like this one: https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/sea...D4CkJBz47OgUIkRPz1-jEeqVSWf1lFuQaAoIAEALw_wcB

Me and my neighbour went halves on it so it's not entirely mine but I'm sure you could borrow it if he's not using it (I don't need it for a while). Problem is it needs a ton of air to keep the pressure up, a little portable compressor simply won't do the job, you need an industrial scale one. Do you have one big enough?

  20. With this flurry of work you only really need an engine and it'll be road ready
