Cheers, to be honest I like the square ones, but getting perfectly straight ones is tricky, and repairing them is even trickier. These ones look a bit more retro though which is what swayed me towards them, and if they get dented etc it's a much easier fix
Next up.. Got my import doors on, and removed all the paint etc. Little bit at the bottom that needs some attention.. Then spent ages scraping and cleaning inside the engine bay. Then lastly I set about fixing the front mudflaps. Got the near side one done, will do the other next weekend,
today's update! I spun the bus round the other day to have a look at the center side panel, and noticed down the side seams there was some bubbling rust, and after a few pokes i got worse. so just decided to replace the whole panel instead of faffing about. So I ordered a nice big center side panel from schofields. Then today set out with the grinder.. this is the edge where a lot of the rust was, some also on the b post edge. here it is with a few patches and some paint welded up some holes on the cargo floor.. right, now this is the new panel.. i didnt know i had to order an outer sill too. so i couldnt fit it, but the sill is now on the way ready for next weekend. offered it up to the bus.. AND.... it dont fit. this is it rested up against the un-altered part of the B post.. and the other end.. about 4-5mm too wide for the hole :/ anyone got any ideas on this?
Its a schofields off the shelf one, ill ring them monday and see what they say. I dont want to have to faff and send it back :/.
Today's update, Managed to get the side panel fitted, I called schofields and they said to try a hammer and dolly and try to bend the edges in, if that didn't work they would replace the panel! I went for the hammer option . After an hour or so I managed to get the panel in the hole nicely, joggled the top edge Edges look pretty good Welded in along the top
Very happy with the result, it's got very little panel distortion, if any. I've also managed to weld the belly pan on and clean the welds up, I have some welding to do along the outer sill and then inside down the edges, and it's done.
Ok today's update, mostly did little bits today. Started off by finishing a few little spot welds inside the side panel, then cleaned off the surface rust etc from this side.. Some spots under the arch that needed doing.. Then trimmed the bottom off the front of the arch to get a nice line.. After cleaning and rust treating, I primed and painted inside the offside arches..
Also, a few weeks back I dropped this lot off at the powder coasters to get done in white... I used a different powder coasters to the usual, not sure why, just fancied a change. Right, so the story.. Took them to the coaters, the guy said the boss weren't in, so they would ring with a quote to see if I wanted to go through with it. Week goes by, no call. So I ring up and they say they've already started blasting and prepping my wheels and bumpers, and the price was £360!!! I said that that was extortionate and that they should have rung me first, he said they would do it for £330 due to not calling me. Still extortionate! But as it was there and they already started I said just do it. They said it will be done by next say (1 week) I ring up sat morning... Not done, will be another week. ???... Next sat I ring up.. Not done, I give off a little and he says he will do me a favour and put it through tonight so I can collect Sunday... I go down Sunday and they have powder coated someone else's wheels.. Beetle wheels, with my bumpers.. In cream! And they had lost some pop top bits and my sender access hole cover. After much debate, I took my cream bumpers and raw blasted wheels, searched for an hour to find my lost bits, then left without paying... Terrible! And they are the people that do all T2D's powder coat! Lovely colour! Shame my bus ain't cream lol
My metal work or the powder coaters? The funny thing is.. I normally use colorcote, which is a huge place opposite lotus, and they do all lotus's race chassis etc. which is just down the road, and as I'm somewhat a regular the owner does me a good deal for cash. So if I had just stuck to what I know, there wouldn't have been any problems, and it would be cheaper. Although when I go there now, they won't need re blasting, so will be even cheaper! It was stupid to use this other place (no names) haha lesson learnt.
Carl after the amount of time and effort you have taken to get things just right It would be a shame not to paint inside the wheel arches body colour
That's the plan mate, the black is a stonechip which is over paintable. Gonna do all the arches in that, then paint body colour, then clear waxoyl I think.
Little update from yesterday, spent most of the morning drilling all the old rivets from the pop top lip, then removed the rust etc, also the cab roof, had a carpet glued to it and you can see where it trapped the moisture.. Then started some filler work, spent most of Thursday evening watching how-to body filler vids on YouTube, then gave it a bash, figured if it went wrong I could take it off, so jumped in at the deep end.. It's going pretty well at the moment, easy to sand. The centre panel was new and mostly straight so that looks pretty good at the moment. But I'm sure after a guide coat it'll show up some ripples.
I've been thinking about doing some of the spraying myself, primer and maybe paint inside and if it turns out good maybe primer outside. Was looking at guns on ebay, this ones a bit pricey, but looks ok? Would this be upto the job anyone know? @zed ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Devilbiss..._Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item3f3400ee66
