I'm about 5minutes away from the forum, ahh skating at the forum, cider, loud music and girls, what more does a teenager need!
Even with a fan heater running its been too cold in the garage for my vactan rust converter to work so i'm left with a dusty pinky blue colour that i can rub off with a gloved hand. Chopped the remains of the rot out of the top of the rear engine louvre panel. Had to chop a section out of the bulkhead to get the grinder in to cut out this rot. Section of rot cut out of the rear window surround. Rest of the surround is solid.
With you and @1973daisey having a beetle resto wants me to have one I miss my 1963 white with red interior bug
Not sure which is worse to restore a bug or a bay. There seems to be a lot more hidden box sections on a bay that rot from the inside out, but at least most of a bays panels are flat.
Pretty piccy of cutaway bug. Gonna remove the gearbox, axles and brakes and take them to my local garage to undo the hub nuts for me as i forgot to undo them when there was a shifter, shift rod and handbrake cables still attached and i can't undo the buggers with a socket and breaker bar.
Got a couple more holes filled. They still need a bit more of a tidy with the finger sander but its solid. Top of the bulkhead next.
Buy yourself a clarke 240 volt impact gun they really are a helpfull thing to have http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clarke-CEW1000-Electric-Impact-Wrench/dp/B0039BQRUO
Gonna probably get an air powered one as i've got a compressor. Got the rest of the welds ground down today: and threw a bit of filler at the bodywork under the back window.
I've had enough practice. I've rebent the curves on the repair i made for the top of the bulkhead as it didn't fit well enough first time around so just gotta weld it in and i can call it done. Need to do a few repairs to the camper before its MOT next month but it keeps raining and pishing it down and my garage is full of bug.
Diddy little aldi compressor and probably aldi windy gun when they are on offer again. Says 4CFM on the box.
Finally got the top of the bulkhead welded on. Welds look a bit Marmitety but its strong and with a big of grinding and a skim of filler it'll be rite. Its getting carpetted anyway so won't be seen. Plug welded the back of it to the section under the back window.
Grinder died mid grind so gave the panel under the rear window a coat of bonda primer: Boot floor has a few pin holes after wire brushing.
Cheaper than what? Theres probably only about £500 of parts on it, though paint, welding wire and filler adds a bit too. All the shells i could find were £500+, needed welding and were 200+ miles away.
