My 1970 bug

  1. I really do hate cleaning stuff.
The gearbox was all covered in a combination of sticky old gearbox oil and road dirt so after scraping as much as i could off with scrapers i gave it its first soaking in degreaser.

After another soaking and a scrubbing with old toothbrushes and nylon brushes it now looks like this:

Not sure if its clean enough for some acid etch or if i'll need to give it another going over.

  2. Axle tubes will come off next for a going over with a wire brush on the grinder, then they'll get a coat of grey oxide primer followed by chassis black.
The rear gearbox mounting cradle is soaking in degeaser as are the bearing housings.
Not sure how to get the old oil seals out of them as they are a tight fit.

  3. I used cif bathroom foam on my gearbox
Spray it on leave for half an hour and then jet washed it off

  4. I have a solution for that...:hattip:

  5. Is don't do it the answer?:p

  9. Every roof truss in the garage now has stuff hanging from either drying or waiting for paint. :)

Been trying to remove the clutch arm and failing miserably. Circlip is off but bust my puller trying to pull the arm off. :(

  15. I couldent get the one of my bay box either

  16. The spring is broken and it looks the only way to replace it is to remove the arm. :(

  17. Can you buy a second hand arm to fit then grind into yours to release it?

  18. Could do. Someone on vzi suggested heating it til cherry red with butane torch then it should come off.

Before you go anywhere else with this please check that the filler plug hasn't seized.

  20. Filler plug was removed before the box was drained then put back in. I've had that happen before on my passat so checked it before emptying it.
