  1. nastey i have a full frame head

  2. I think thats gonna be an option. A lot of the replacement chassis i found need framehead work or both floorpans replacing. Or they want nearly a grand for them.
I found a pdf file online of the vw workshop proceedure for framehead replacement including the diagrams for the alignment jig.

  3. Bought a couple of these to replace some of the rot in the engine compartment and got an earful off the missus for spending money on the beetle when she's just spent loads of money on something useless for the kitchen.

I haven't told her yet about the other 4 panels coming in a few weeks time.

  6. Mines not as bad I think I'm gonna repair mine as only 2/3 holes !!
Allso what u using to seem seal ?

  7. Mine was heavily undersealed so rotted out underneath it plus it had aluminium caster shims fitted on the bottom tubes so they accelerated the rot too. :(
Your resto is cracking along at a helluva rate. Are you planning on having it on the road for the summer this year?

I've been using Autoseal seam sealer (the stuff in the cartridge tube for use with a skeleton gun) off ebay for years which seems OK but i tried some MHP Seam seal last and as it contains isocyanates i had a nasty reaction to it.
Tiger seal gets good reviews too plus it sticks like poo to a blanket.:p

  8. Test fitted the old drivers door to see if everything is still where it should be. Bit tight at the front next to the windscreen pillar and gap is a bit large above the swage line but its not too bad. Needs to go up about 4mm to line up with the swage line too. 2016-01-04 14.25.57.jpg

  9. Found a little rust hole in the top corner of the engine bay where the sisal rope is pushed into the seam along the top of the bulkhead, and the luggage floor has some perforations where the bulkhead corners are spot welded in. Again not too bad in the grand scheme of things.

  10. Chopped the rest of the bottom of the bulkhead off today.

Gonna have to lift the shell off the chassis to gain enough space to get the grinder in to tidy the bits above the gearbox.

Think something like this might do and will also allowe me to wheel the chassis out from under the shell to clean it up outside.

  11. Remade the rusty middle bit of the lower bulkhead. Just needs some bonda primer on it and welding in. :)

Made a start chopping out the rust along the top of the bulkhead firewall.
    Loads of spotwwelds drilled out:

Cut along the top of the bulkhead and started separating it from the engine surround drip tray.

  13. Should be fun trying to remake this from a sheet of flat steel. Its the top of the rear bulkhead and is a 3ft long strip.

  14. Had a quick go at making the profile needed to repair the top of the rear bulkhead.

Pretty pleased with how it turned out so will make the full 37" long section now. It'll be made from part of the campers old rear hatch. Recycling VW steel into something useful. :)

  15. Would you like me to keep those head light bowls from the front panel until your up this way?

If not the full panel is going to the scrap man!

  16. Nicely done

  17. If you wouldn't mind. I'll be over at the middle of next month as its my mums 70th.

Ta. Will see how well the full section turns out tomorrow. My workbench isn't long enough to work on it now as theres a vise on one end and a bench grinder on the other. Gonna make use of the father inlaws bench and tools.

  18. No problem, I will chop them out plus a couple of inches of the surrounding panel and put them to one side, just send me a pm next time your over this way.

  19. Cheers. Where in Teesside are you?

In between looking out the inlaws garage window at the snow falling (the first we've had in 2 years) i managed to get the repair for the top of the bulkhead bent up.

Needs a little straightening in places but not too shabby for something made with a hammer and a lump of wood to form it over.

  20. I'm in Billingham
