Got the other rear 1/4 sanded today and the edge of the roof. The rest of the shell is now ready to be degreased, tack ragged then primed tomorrow.
Been doing my best Breaking Bad impression today. Gave the interior, under the bonnet area, engine bay and the underside of both engine lid and bonnet a few coats of primer today. Photobucket is down so you'll have to wait to see the interesting piccies.
Photobucket still down and no idea when it will be back up and running properly so heres some piccies from Facebook. First coat of primer: Gave them a few more coats over the course of the afternoon. Heres the under bonnet area after 4 coats:
Engine lid with some primer on the underside: Did the bonnet too: Painted the inner arches with a coat of primer as there was still some in the pot.
Started to run out here. I've been kicking this around the garage for weeks so thought i'd clean it up, rust cure it and give it a coat of stonechip: I'm using an old Apollo turbine unit i borrowed off a mate. One of these thats powered by a vacuum cleaner motor. Great piece of kit, pretty quiet and easy to set up and use.
I may if just solved my issue a pal Iv just made seen my bus at pub today and said u no what I do right I own a collision workshop u can have my booth !!! Urs is looking awesome watching closely !!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You've been offered the use of a booth? I was told the type of sprayer i used was only good for painting fences. I first saw one in Jim Tyler's Beetle Owners Survival Manual book and the fact it produces virtually zero overspray is ideal for use in a small garage. I got given this small stash of magazines a couple of days ago from someone on VZi: Theres about 300+ magazines, a lot of which i already have, dating back to the early 70's, plus a couple of haynes manuals (in ring binders), two manuals for early beetle and type3 and this: I've been looking for one from 1970 but wasn't willing to pay the £12 or more they go for on ebay. This is from August 1967 so will have to do for now. Gonna see if i can get the outside of the shell painted this afternoon. Still need to tackle the doors and sand all 4 wings but it'll be nice to see it all in one colour (even if it is grey primer) for the first time in 15 years.
Managed to get 4 coats of primer on the outside of the shell and engine lid today. Pretty happy with the results. Ended up with a little run under the rear vents on the second coat: But i gave it a wee sand and applied a couple more coats. I also made a run on the roof on the second coat as i slipped and got too close with the gun. Apart from laying on the final coat on the roof a little dry it didn't end up too bad.
Engine lid after 4 coats. Front valance turned out pretty good considering the damage i managed to do to the front clip. Rear 1/4 turned out OK and looks pretty smooth. The front 1/4s are good too apart from one slight paint reaction the size of a 5p on the passengers side. One of the dash as i'm really pleased with how it turned out Especially considering it looked like this at one point.
I flatted the runs out after the 2nd coat and put another 3 coats on top. They've gone now. I figured out why the paint on the roof went on too dry. I adjusted the paint adjuster 1/2 a turn the wrong way.
Forgot there was so many small body colours parts i'd squirrelled away somewhere over the years that'll need priming and painting. So far i've found: Glovebox lid Grills either side of the speedo Ash tray front Bonnet hinges Engine lid hinges Round cover plate in the front valance Still can't put my hands on the filler flap though. Found this in one of the old mags i got given. May have to stick it in the window.
Think i've finally tracked down all the bolt on parts that need painting. Gave the first few bits a sand ready for some primer. Engine lid hinges need a bit of a rust cure though.
Sanded the rear light housings ready for primer. Found this VW part number on one of them. Made a start on sanding the bonnet. Got 1/2 of it done and managed to sand half my finger nail off.
Bought some stopper to fill in the little pinholes. Finished sanding the bonnet: Sanded the passengers side rear wing too:
