My 1970 bug

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Zebedee, Sep 9, 2011.

  1. Spent the afternoon scraping all the underseal off the underside of the lid using one of my father inlaws chisels.
Who knew it was the same colour as my bug is? Coincidence?

Gave a it a wipe with some white spirit and it cleans up the leftover goo nicely.

  2. Got 95% of the stuff cleaned off. Just some of the fiddly bits round the hinge mounting to do now.

Gave the chips and other blemishes a rub down.
Needs a few little rust holes welding up and the raincatcher drain clip welding on once i make one.

  3. Gave the inside of the bonnet a bit of a sand to give the high build something to grip on.
A couple of bits to sand as they are still shiney.

Outside of bonnet needs a sand now.

  4. Wishing I had one to play with :)

  5. I'll send you some parts to sand if you want because i hate doing it.

  6. Ha I would ;)but I'm having trouble with the paint on my pop top edging:mad: it keeps reacting with the top coat looks like I will have to strip completely :(

  7. Are you using cellulose as a topcoat? Doing my bug in celly as not got the safety gear for spraying 2k and as it reacts with pretty much every paint that's not cellulose it'll need a coat of barcoat on the outside to stop it.

  8. Nope 2k all the way but it's the etch primmer then the high build is lifting in the corner :( so il dig that bit out an redoo

  9. Odd. Normally 2k will go over anything.

  10. Yeah I know I think it's lifting when it's drying it's only tiny :thinking:about half the size of a grain of rice but it's happening so not good

  11. Inside is now ready for high build now i think. :)

Engine bay is too i think. Atleast most of it is hidden by the tarboard so not too bothered about how it looks.

Welded up a couple of rust holes that were behind the number plate and gave it a skim of filler.

Noticed this on the front of my westy. :(
    [IMG]

  12. Silly little welding jobs tackled today.
Welded up the cracks in the nose of the bonnet and ground the welds down.

Cut the slightly rotten edge off the engine lid.

Made a section to fill the gap adding the raincatcher's drain hose clip that had snapped off back.

    Welded in and ground down.

Just gave it a skim of filler so it should be an invisible repair.:)

  13. I was gonna take our westy out for a run around the lakes but by the time the engine had cranked over enough to draw fuel into the carb the battery was nearly flat.

Spent the afternoon in the garage instead.
Gave the repair a sand and a spray of etch primer.
Really needs a bit more sanding but the mexican style seal covers it anyway.

Nose of bonnet was given a sand and etch.

Bare metal bits inside the bonnet got a coat too.

Managed to remove the gear linkage and wondered how the hell it got a bend in it.
    Turns out its meant to.
Gave it a clean up and some etch anyway while it was hanging about.:p
    [IMG]
Nothing like a tidy work area eh? And yes, this is nothing like a tidy work area.

Dragged the chassis out from under the bug again so i could tidy up all the dust and other crap thats made a home under there.

Managed to duck under my mountain bike going out of the garage but on the way back in i stood up too early and noggin to chain ring contact did ensue. [IMG]

  14. nice job that wee repair , try 2k primer 3 to 1 paint activator no thinners if anything its the thinners thats the problem

  15. I can't use 2k as allergic to the Isocyanes in it. Same with polyeurathane sealers and expandable foam for some reason.
Not sure if its the thinners or the paint that contains the isos though.

Chopped a superfluous bracket off the washer bottle recess, ground down the remaining weld and etch primed it.
Should have blown the dust off the camera lens before taking the piccy.

Spent a good hour sanding, rust curing and etch priming something thats not easy to see when the engine lid is on.
Just needs all the spiders webs hoovering out of there now. Theres bloody loads.

  16. End of the scuttle looks a bit better after some more sanding.

Bonnet given another fill and a bit of a sand.
Needs the rest of the paint sanding now.
My sander went bang after it inhaled too much dust even with the hoover attached to its dust extractor. :(

  17. Took my westy for a run around the lakes today and learned that my split charge relay is duff as it wasn't charging the battery at all. :(
Before i put it back under the carport i used the opportunity to move the bug's chassis out of the garage.

Before standing it up against the house on some old tyres and wheels.

Just about enough space to still get in the sliding door.;)

Gave me a chance to access the condition of the underside of the pan.
Passengers side jacking point needs a little more cutting off.

It also needs some repairs to this bit but sure as hell not gonna spend £23 for a replacement panel.

Drivers side jacking point is shot too as its just a lovely mud trap.

Passengers pan has split along the weld along the tunnel.

    Drivers side isn't much better.

  18. do away with jacking points , weld in new floor section then a 2mm sq plate to do the same job looking good

  19. Yeah, the jacking points aren't going back on. They're just something to trap dirt and rot from the inside out.

Turned my westy into a shed again cleaning most of the bug parts out of the garage.

  20. Been removing the transit primer off the replacement front clip.
Few dents needed tapping out and some filler added.

Gave it a coat of bonda primer.

Welded up a couple of spots under the front bulkhead i'd missed when i welded the channels to it.
Found a use for my workmate.:D
