My 1970 bug

  1. Smoothed out the chips and dent in the top of the dash and scuttle and spot primed them with bonda primer.

Sanded the remains of the transit primer off the passengers inner arch and gave it a coat of bonda primer.

Gave up trying to get the crinkles out of the panel as its gonna get a coat or two of gravitex anyway.:p
Not sure if its had a knock at some point in its life, but as the dimensions all work out factory it was pulled out reasonably well.

Did the same on the drivers side.

  2. Gave the engine lid a quick coat of etch this afternoon.

Chipped all the underseal off the inner arch to reveal the transit primer that was never removed.

Cleaned the remains off with white spirit then bare metalled it and gave it a coat of bonda primer.

Did the same with the drivers arch.

    How it currently looks.

  5. A replacement floorpan would be the best option but good solid ones go for silly money. :(

  9. Cheers. :)
Is your Jeans bug as bad as mine? Or 1973daisey's?

    Race ya. :D
Hopefully i'll have it all sanded by the end of the week and ready for primer.
Gonna have to practice a bit with the sprayer and as it was last used to spray metal flake it will need adjusting a bit i assume.

  10. Mine's pretty tired.
    Currently in bits.
Heater channels rotten, inner rear arches rotten, battery tray rotten, spare wheel well rotten.

Sorry to photo bomb your thread.

  11. Just as bad as mine then. They do love to rot. :(

I got offered a perfect '69 chassis yesterday for £300. Would cost more than that for new pans and the rest of the panels needed on mine. Only problem is that it was built for a buggy and is 13" shorter. :(
Don't think i can trick Fran into me having a buggy aswell.

Got the interior, engine compartment and under bonnet sanded now ready for high build.
Did i mention i hate sanding?

Made a start on the outside. Got scuttle, windscreen pillars and some of the inner arches done before i lost the will to live.

  13. Where have you sourced your body panels from? I might look into parts prices for mine.

Not just me with a green 1970 bug then

Had the floor pans, frame head, heater channels, front bulkhead and so much more replaced by Dean at D T Metallic Technology. If you look at the photos on his Facebook page under 'beetle project' you will see how much had to be done.

  15. I got a few from GSF when they had their 43% off weekends but as their normal prices are about 35% higher than VeeWee their aircooled shop theres not much of a saving.
Try to avoid klokkerholm panels if at all possible as most are shocking quality with ripples in them and bends in the wrong place etc.
http://www.hookyspanelshop.com/our-panels.html for A pillar bottoms, engine bay panels, and rear bumper mounts too if its pre '67. Their panels are spot on and fit great.
JK and VWHeritage sell at a decent price too. Not sure if theres a forum discount available.
Buying from shows is probably the cheapest way (apart from having to buy the show tickets etc) as theres usually some good offers from traders and secondhand unused panels in the autojumble etc.

Very nice. I though about having cream sides on mine when it was last done in the late 90's but stayed the original elm green throughout. Going a slightly lighter colour now for a change.

  16. Thanks for the info mate. I'm still debating if I want to keep it yet!

  17. It was a special edition so will only go up in value. Depends how attached you are to it.

  18. I thought the front 1/4 panels were pretty straight until i block sanded them with a guide coat.

Did half the roof aswell as the vents under the back window and outsides of the heater channels.

  20. Only had the chance to get in the garage for a half hour or so today as had to take Fran to her physio appointment but still got most of the other side of the roof sanded. :)
Just the section along the gutter to do and then the passengers side rear 1/4 panel.
