Loss of Oil, Noise and Vibration!

  2. Finnaly got a couple of hours to play with the engine some more,

    Its not looking pretty.

    The valves are looking a bit corroded

    The Haynes manual said to warm up the pistons to get the pin out, I got bord of waiting so gave up for the day. Anybody got any better ideas to warm tem up? I was going to buy a little fan heater as the cold weather is coming and I recon I have a winter of work ahead of me.

    Also one of the pistons only had one circlip holding it on!

    Heads are both cracked to the spark plug hole. :(

    I was to busy looking at the corrosion to notice.

    'fraid so. But don't order any parts, just keep stripping and find everything that's buggered first. If it's as bad as we suspect, you'd be better off keeping an eye out for a second hand engine or getting a rebuilt one.

    It's provisionlly sold and doesn't have heads.
    Keep going - if nothing else it's fun to take it apart.
     
  8. Waft the piston with a heat gun and the pin will come out.

    Not sure but you might be able to get the heads welded?

  10. Yeah I thought about a heat gun later that day in work. I have one somewhere!

    I've read you shouldn't hit them out as you can bend the con rod. That right? I'll possibly use a combination of both.
     
  11. I think it's best not to hit anything really :thinking: But I'm sure if Paul has never had a problem then it's probably not a problem. I've just always heated pistons to get the pin out.

    If they are still being stubborn you can use a quick clamp and a deep socket. Get a socket the same size as the pin, place it on the end of the pin then put the clamp around the pin and piston. Squeeze clamp up and the pin will start to move. Once the pin is flush with the other side of the piston you have to put the clamp on a bit wonky so the pin can come out. That might be useful if in fact it made any sense!!

  12. Will keep an eye on this thread seems a real mystery.
    There has to be an obvious fault somewhere in the engine sounds like main bearings or crank to me.
    Will watch with interest

    Just pour some hot water around the piston near the pins they will loosen

    After a quick look I can't find anything to blame for the vibration under acceleration. I then gave up for the day as its getting cold. I know people with more knowledge on these things, I 'll let them look.
     
  15. Can you get a picture of the 2nd main bearing from the pulley, and the thrust bearing... the outside of it looks a little off in your pics, like it's been shuffling in the case...

    I may have found it now as I assume the pully end bearing should turn freely on the crank like the other two? Cos it will not move.
     
  18. Yeah, it should be a free rotation, with a slight drag from the oil on the mating surfaces...

    It looks to me like the bearings have started to move in the case, so it's possibly time for a case line bore...

    This bearing looks like the peg hole has started to go elliptical... you should check the thrust bearing for the same

  19. After a good old look over it today I think ive got to the bottom of the problem.
    Looks like the pulley end bearing had been fitted wrong!
    Have a look at these photos.

    You can see the wear marks on the bearing and housing. It's clearly in the wrong place stopping the right amount oil getting to the crank.

    Also the peg is missing from the flywheel end bearing, there is evidence that its been spinning and when the bearing is in place it's loose.

    Also there is wear in the cam shaft bearing seats,

    My conclusion, it's buggered! The cost of buying and sorting everything my self is so much that I'm just going to save up and buy an engine! Probably and exchange engine with a bit of warranty.

    Which engine company have people used for a reconditioned engine? Would you recommend them or steer clear?
