Loss of Oil, Noise and Vibration!

  1. If you've not seen this on my project thread here is whats up and what I've found so far..

I went to the Belgium F1 in the van all was well (though I had to re-rig the points as it would'nt start when I went to get on the ferry) But as I was travelling through Belgium I noticed a rough noise and I a vibraton through the gear stick under acceleration.
When we got to the camp site (180 miles into Belgium) I noticed a little oil on the back of the van, had a look under and could'nt see an obvious point that it was comming from.
Into the weekend I wanted to give the leisure battery a charge so I started her up. The van gave a wierd squeak as if the starter was sticking and but sounded fine on idol untill I reved it a little when the roughness was there.
Armed with euro break down cover we headed back to Dunkirk wondering how far we'd get. The noise did'nt get any worse and we made it back to the ferry. As we travelled north onto the M25 i the noise was getting worse and the oil temp was getting higher. Just after the Dartford tunnel the oil temp went up and the oil pressure went down! I pulled over to find the rear of the van covered in oil and very little left in the van. AA time!

I've not got round to dropping the engine but I've dumped what oil was left via the sump plug to find a fine swarf in the oil. I've been advised since to get the oil mesh out to see if there any large bearing parts in it.
At this time looking under it looks like the oil came from where the engine meets the gear box so maybe the flywheel seal.

Any ideas or had a simular fault?

    :'(

Here is what zed has said on my other thread.

sucks air through teeth...... it's gonna cost ya...... bearings. whatever it is engine out and strip now you found swarf and it's run hot with little or no oil, strip it and renew as required or you'll do it twice..... maybe cheaper getting a 2nd hand runner than messing about.

PM'd you with an idea. :)

  4. Big end on the way out by the sounds of it

  5. Today the engine came out!

After a quick look I found these marks, not enough I feel for the swarf and noise.

I also took out the oil mesh, nothing to report there, so just a fine swarf.
I've stopped for the day as I've been up since 03:00, bed time soon.
I'll look into zed's ideas another day.

  6. Is there oil coming from behind the flywheel?

Likeliest explanation is that the seal has gone, dumped the oil and the main bearings have suffered.

Looks to me like the flywheel is loose. That would explain all symptoms. Fingers crossed you get lucky. 8)

  8. Finally got round to looking at the engine.
The flywheel has some wear on roughly 2/3s of the teeth.

You can see on this photo where the wear ends.

More invest to come following zed's ideas.
But what do we think so far?

  9. Also scoring and oil in the bell too!

Not finding and movement on the pully side. Turned to TDC witha spanner and that felt normal. But nothing loose up/down left/right.

Just a loose flywheel and buggered oil seal?

  10. Ok, what can I use to lever against to get the flywheel off?

  11. Just found this, anybody used it before? Is it any good?
    ...just found this

  12. it's what I use dude!!

  13. I used the locking tool, but it doesn't stop the whole engine from tipping over, especially if you have the exhausts off.

i use a metal rod with holes for the flywheel where the clutch attaches, you just pull two rods together and viola.

  14. The flywheel lock tool worked great!
Flywheel now off and I still can't find an obvious problem.

  15. Was it nice and tight??

  16. may not be relevant ,
but when i stripped the shakin knockin engine on mine [it came like it with the bus]

the back bearing was loose in the case and the pistons may have been contacting the head,

i also found a similar gouge in the bell housing and a few worn teeth,
but no swarf in there to suggest it was recent... :-

    just a sugestion.. ;)

I can't see that wear on the rock hard flywheel being cased by contact with the soft bell housing. What's the starter dog look like and as above was the flywheel loose?

  18. Are you piddling oil from the seal?

  19. I had a friend who is very clued up on this stuff who pointed out that my oil seal is not quite in the right place, it should be further in by a couple of mm and also I'm missing an O ring seal from inside the flywheel.

There is a photo of the starter earlyer in thread and it looks fine.

Its not obvious what the problem is.

The car is getting SORNed for the winter so I can work on it slow time.

  20. Started stripping the engine ready for a good old clean, inspection and rebuild. I may tart it up abit while I'm here.

I am an aircraft techy, so I find spannering in my own time a lot of fun and a great way to spen an afternoon.
But then I did something that could have been very silly, I lifted the engine onto my work bench alone.

Not that silly you might think, but I have a been suffering with back pain for years now! Oh well.

Still no nearer to finding the problem...
