  1. 25 in an Oxfordshire town school in the 1980s would have been unheard of . No 2.5 in total .

    I don’t understand how it’s 2.5?

    I mean, I suspect I do, I just hope I’m wrong.

  4. You can suspect as much as you like ! .The 0.5 accounts for Colin who is of mixed race and very proud of it . He actively tells people that he is the 0.5 .

  10. Hear what ? Like I have said previously please send a PM if you have a problem(s) as you seem to be a bit prickly and sensitive of late .

    Ok…I’ll grasp the nettle.

Most of us grew up in the 70’s where things like the black and white minstrels, Alf Garnet and Jim Davison meant casual racism was rife.

Black kids, Asian kids etc grew up to a backdrop of that….what choice did they have.

So most people have a friend who we thought was happy to go along with the joke…..from there perspective it was pure survival….there was no joke.

A bit like how most people had a gay friend who apparently was happy to be called a poof, so all gay people are fine with it.

    None of them were.

I don’t know your friend. Ask him if you see him how whichever parent was black thought of him calling himself 0.5. I bet he never took that home….ever imagined why?

All the above is my recognising that the past is indeed another country.

Many men needed an excuse for their homophobia, racism and chauvinism…is it not funny how all of them use this language but always have a ‘friend’ that was ok with it? So everyone else needs to be ok with it.

    That was 40 years ago.

There is little excuse to not modify how we conduct ourselves and carry the past forward.

I’d be appalled if a friend of mine described a mixed race child as 0.5 in this day and age….you had ZERO need to do that here, today.

I’m trying to give you some breathing space, maybe give it some thought.

Im not being prickly or precious.

  12. I need breathing space and a lie down after reading your long winded waffle . Will give everything you say zero thought and will just t get on with jobs around the house as cleaning the bathroom after my two kids seems suddenly appealing .

While you found a diving board to jump off to air your view, which I wholeheartedly agree with, it might have been better to just type it out rather than aiming it at someone in particular.
Race is a funny old thing and those caught between one race and another have nowhere to rest for sure. I've had a fair few friends that fit into that slot - Black people adopted by white people, anglo-indians... My bro was married to a Trinadadian American and my eldest's partner is Indian/English. It's notable that racism exists in all cultures, but is actually usually more vehement and excluding in others than in our own. We ain't perfect by any means but the friends I've had that were betwixt and between were more accepted by the white half and often 100% shunned by the other. Cut some slack eh? :)

Must agree that in general white folk are more tolerant of other races/colours, call it what you will.
Went to my wife’s goddaughter’s wedding recently…. they have been together since before Covid and bought a house together just before lockdown.
His side of the family ( Indian) refused to even meet the bride’s parents before the wedding and refused to have any pictures taken except with their son and family.
After I was made redundant/retired, I did a bit of accompanied viewing of rental properties…. lots of the viewers were Polish or Lithuanian…. their first question was always “ is the landlord Asian”.
People from all ethnicities are to a point racist, I don’t think anyone on here is, other than some questionable attitudes relative to our age and upbringing.

You think I started my Sunday with a need to air these views and came here?

The couple of queries about the use of the decimal point before the longer reply IS my cutting some slack.

  20. My teens were spent in Chapletown Leeds what would be now classed as a very underpriveliged multicultural society , it was a hole but we all lived in the same hole so just got on with enjoying life and a good collection of mates , some of which I still keep in touch with 40 + years later .
As for associated TV racism , I never saw the minstrels and thought Jim Davidson / Alf Garnet / Love thy neighbour et al about as funny as a dose of pox . We , as a group just got on with growing up but to answer your 0.5 statement being racist , a popular reference back then was 'coloured' but that was offensive in itself and to quote "I ain't effing blue or green , I'm effing black !"
Obviously you lived elsewhere but where I came from we HAD to get along and racism didn't feature .
