Do you see that when faced with this kind of investigation of their posts, a lot of people will simply not bother posting? Or that others will simply post banal drivel to avoid it? It's been a great example of a point I made earlier.

I do agree, but equally I would say that a forum is to put viewpoints and expect acceptance or criticism. If forumites are not interested then they can move on. If it’s rude, aggressive or pointless then moderators can intervene.
Purples viewpoint came “ out of the blue “:):). Should it not be challenged ?
Let’s face it the title of this thread sums it up…..only those reading it would be remotely interested.:)
Ps Purple and I have made up :D

Do I care about what I write? Most of the time, depends on the subject matter….I like a touch of the absurd.

A gammon is a mostly derogatory term not only describing a person of a particular leaning, but also what subjects they get het up about…which is why I don’t see myself or anyone in here as a gammon tbh.

Do people here write with passion, I’d say so.

Do I? Well, I write in a particular way….I assume it’s because I learnt English through Welsh…….my professional writing is often described as discernible. It’s not, as I’ve been often accused of in here, deliberate…it’s simply how I express myself in text….I’m also often accused of being far more charged up than I actually am, witness the threads I started on swearing where I for whatever reason took a fair amount of flack and repeatedly had to bring the discussion back to my actual point…..and not cast asunder the very fabric of the British way of life as some seemed to take it.

This forum has always breathed in and out as the seasons progress.

Some days you can literally feel the cabin fever kicking in.

  8. As a "newcomer", I feel it is great place. I've been helped to orders parts from UK (which never fit:rolleyes: but that'a another story) without even asking for! Great welcoming place, lot's of good advices and resto/diy threads. Maybe it lacks more involved subjects, like some on The Samba. The general discussion forums is like a noisy pub. A bunch of friends who like to discuss anything from their dog walks to sensible politics subjects while sharing a joke or three. It may be a bit hard for newcomers to join in some of those discussions, you looks to know each others well even in real life, not easy to squeeze in without feeling out of place ;)

Banter in a workplace was the norm and definitely should have its place still. .Some of you may be confusing this with bullying .The 16year old apprentice if he was a bit to cocky or for want of a better expression gobby he would get a fair amount of banter and flak aimed towards him but not in a malicious way more to take him down a notch or two but at the same time the quiet new apprentice would be encouraged to come out of his shell but with a completely different type of banter . It's a case of getting the balance right .It can really help moral , creating a friendly work environment and working together as a team . I can imagine the workplaces for some people now is way to PC and sterile . I still work in a place with loads of banter that is toned down slightly since the late 80s and if you have personally experienced this as an apprenticeship /junior you will know exactly what I am on about .

I have to apologise for kicking this one off again without first ensuring that I had nicked all the wooden soapboxes at Speakers Corner and replaced them with wobbly plastic stools.

All I was saying is what makes a forum like this valuable is a lack of commercialism.

    Thanks for the kind words.
It was following restorations from the likes of @Diddymen, @wombles and @martinvention that gave me the confidence to get stuck into my own project, so I'm glad to hear mine are still being enjoyed.
I love following other restos on here and it's still one of the main reasons I visit the forum. I'm much more interested in seeing a resto that someone has at least done some of the work on themselves rather than what seems to be most common at the few shows I've been to where most of the vehicles there state "welding by x, paintwork by y, interior by z".

Hi Jean-Francois,I think you’re quite an oldy on here :). I agree it helps a bit if you have met some of the others as you can put names to a face and because you have spoken in real life it is easier to gauge comments than in text. That said, there’s still quite a few folks I’ve never met on here.

  18. That was my experience of being an apprentice electrician, although I'd say there was no appetite to challenge or stop the bullying that did go on. Aside of that there was a system of hierarchy that sometimes felt like bullying - making the tea, doing the chip shop run and always being left out of pocket.....

Someone previously mentioned that 40 somethings still living at home as having some dominance in the workplace behaviour? My experience of working in factories is the polar opposite of that - blokes in their 40s still living at home with mum would be slaughtered for it and all the 'mummy's boy' innuendo that goes with it.
