I'll tell you what will kill the forum......

Threads started simply because they rhyme with another legitimate thread.

Threads that are on a similar subject to a legitimate thread.


Anything in between. A legit thread is one started for a reason - not one started for either of the two reasons above.


It was funny at first - and fairly funny for the next couple of years,


But - when pretty much the entirety of the General Discussions page is 3 legitimate threads and every other is as described above - its going to kill the forum.


Ultimately its up to the people doing it to carry on or not - and I am happy I'll be accused of being a killjoy - but mark my words, when you replace legitimate threads with detritus, it stops people bothering.


Don't need anyone to agree with me, or indeed correct me. Don't need a witch hunt - but the forum is getting quieter month on month and this isn't helping in my humble opinion.

 

I think that is fair enough. We do sometimes get carried away with what is, basically, silliness. I don’t see anything wrong in that as such, I think in times like these a little silliness goes a long way. But you are right @Moons , we should probably rein it in a bit.

 

Could it also be a result of over moderation / over administration?
Some of the good opinion threads get locked from fear of offending someone.
In real life you talk to someone disagree with them or their view, have a beer and at the end go "my god is that the time, she'll kill me, see you next week"
The only thing left is sillyness.

Q the posts “I tell you what will be brill on the forum” and “ I tell you what will etc etc.

Not enough restoration threads .. and tech threads IMHO

This is the General thread. There are resto and mech/tech threads already.

 

This is the ‘Light Hearted’ thread, isn’t it?
To be silly, and blow off steam…etc…?

 

There are plenty of easily-recognisable legit threads. Just ignore the rest, if they offend you.

 

Put the silliness in the original thread, it’ll at least have context!

 

Personally, I do, but sometimes it takes a while to get there and then you realise it’s an in joke between maybe 4 people that you aren’t in on.

For anyone not that frequent on here I imagine it’s a pain in the Harris……marry that with advice to not read many of the threads….not sure if that’s healthy for a discussion forum.


Maybe the middle ground is kept the silliness in thread rather than start a new one for zero good reason.

 

On another forum I visit, it is possible to choose to just see certain topics, say mech, etc and allows you to ignore certain topics. We could create a 'silly' topic under general discussion that would allow peeps to put their silly threads there and then allow peeps to choose what they want to see. Just a thought that could help.

Yep, I don’t think, personally, a separate silliness discussion thread is needed. The humour/silliness is best when it happens, er, organically for want of a better word, maybe spontaneous would be the right word. I think it just a case of self censoring. I have no idea if it’s seen as “ in jokes” that excludes others. I don’t feel excluded from Mech tech threads by my lack of mechanical knowledge.
