It will advance on top of whatever you’ve set idle advance to, as Zed says. The advance is relative (to the idle setting), rather than absolute (to TDC). Rev the engine and set the max advance on the pulley to 28-30 degrees. Idle ends up at about 10 degrees, which is pretty irrelevant.
We assume it works A 123 has no way of knowing where TDC is, so uses what you’ve set idle to as its reference.
Thanks - got it. It is set at a nominal 7.5deg statically and then refine the max advance where it matters, like normal
Yep. For setting static, you have to use the internal LED, as it shuts the current to the coil off if the engine's not rotating, so you can't use the old-school lightbulb method.
I have sent VWjim an email seeing if he can get hold of the spacers easily and for a reasonable price, I know they are 9euros at CSP but when you go to shipping its an additional 22euros!! maybe if somebody else emails him requesting the spacer as well it will highlight the issue and that others want the spacer.
That’s all that was listed on the 123ignition website, under ‘Accessories’. Apart from these, which seem generic but maybe not as fat (hard to tell) as the previously posted one: So I was just thinking that if 123 don’t list it then it isn’t something they supply Not mentioned in the manual either. Totally on board with getting one, if that’s what folk recommend, because i’ve absolutely no idea what i’m doing Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This is a bit norty. I know it's only a few quid but if it's sold for a VW and a VW needs the spacer then a spacer is part of the assembly and should be in the box.
I agree but the majority fitting these just push the distributor in as far as it will go, tighten the clamp and forget about it. It works, probably because as the clamp is tightened the distributor lifts slightly (pushed up by the spring), giving the clearance at the drive coupling. I faffed about reshaping the clamp so when it’s bolted down the distributor is held in the correct position, but a spacer would be far quicker, easier and more accurate. A clamp, similar to the one lhu1281 made, the same thickness as the spacer would be ideal.
LHU makes himself some lovely parts, that clamp is a thing of beauty. Having read this thread I'd want a spacer - I wonder how many are fitted too far/hard in? If a person didn't know better it would seem the distributor wasn't fully seated. Perhaps it sorts itself out enough free play while setting the timing, but that would be pure luck if you weren't aware.
But if you made one the same thickness as the spacer with the bore to suit a distributor, I’d buy it, and maybe a few others would too.
Is it one of these anyone wants the size of? Or is there another spacer..? Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
That looks like the one. It fits against the shoulder on the distributor when installed with the standard clamp underneath. Is that a grub screw in the side of the spacer?
