I know it's been covered, but I'm very keen on doing a Scooby conversion. Is that better?

i work on mine myself .
in three years ive done a cam belt new leads and a service, parts are not that expensive as theres thousands of subarus around and if something rearly bad went wrong with the engine you could get a new one for about 500 quid
i was going to upgrade my brakes but after just fitting a new servo theres no need to upgrade as they are now spot on
ive got a massive chrome vw badge and why not its still a vw but with a subaru engine
my van should have gone scrapper but ive put it back on the road mines a mix match of parts and styles so changing the engine was a no brainer

ive got a 1978 panel van converted to a camper
    red9 front suspension
a front end that thinks it is a prototype bay
inside it carries 6 adults with seat belts
it allso sleeps 4 adults and one child
seating for 6 around a table
a massive cuboard but no cooker or fridge

nothing on mine is original i think the only bits of metal we didnt change was the guttering and the rear vents :)

    PMT I think.

  4. Has anyone looked at this site? There's a great YouTube vid of a 6 cylinder Scooby bay - it's awesome and goes like a scalded cat!

Yep, they do the reversed input shaft meaning you can use the scooby box.
Expensive but I'm sure it'd be superb!

  6. £2700 roughly - dear it is - but, if you don't have a good gearbox, you'll spend a grand getting a decent 091, it'll sit higher in the engine bay so you won't need a short sump and you don't need to buy the adapter plate....... I make that £1835 at Fellows prices, so £865 extra for a five speed box and nice easy motorway cruising. It's tempting. :)

  7. You should be out looking for a Suburu, not on here, people are waiting y,know :D

  9. Plenty of time, bus won't be here for 8 weeks:)

  10. Expensive..I'm not sure? I had a quick look at these and from memory Subarugears are charging 2200 aus dollars.. Is that about £1278GBP??
I've seen two 091 6 rib gear boxes sell for around the £600 mark add the price of a bellhousing and input shaft etc and your nearly there??
I've kept the subaru box .. Just in case.
Edit: I've just had a look at the Subarugears site..
A rear drive conversion kit is $2200AUD inc shipping.

I think a couple of people on vzi have gone for the Subaru gears set up but got stung a bit on on some import tax. Might be worth a group buy and get a better deal. The way petrol prices are going it would pay for it self soon enough.

  12. would a customs officer realise that those bits are worth over a grand? surely you can get 'em shipped with a low value marked on them, might foobar the insurance if they get lost in transit though.

Iv never got anything like that from over seas so I don't know what the rules and regs are. Just remember seeing it on vzi.

  14. I sent some motorcycle gear to Norway and marked the parcel "Gift" so the recipient didn't pay tax. Yes I know, naughty, but you can't mess with the Norwegian hells angels .lol.
People paypal and mark as a gift to get round fees.
I might message Subarugears to see what they say.
    Edit ; Sent email.

  15. its certainly warming up in here,

  16. Order it at Christmas as a gift - everyone else does :). Ooooo - look what Great Aunt Sheila has sent me from Adelaide...

If you've hot a knackered or no box it'd certainly be tempting.
Obviously 5 speed would be better but my 6 rib is absolutely fine.

My van is pretty original, whilst I want to take it back to fairly standard I also want to use it and enjoy it on my terms, not those of anyone else.

I like the discussion and viewpoints - but when push come to shove, it's my hard earnt and thus my decision on my van.

If/when I choose to do anything with the box on mine I'll be going down the subaru gears route.

  19. I'm looking at options for my van as the engine needs some tlc.

    Is £7000 really the cost?

I don't want a drag racer just a reliable bus.
