I know it's been covered, but I'm very keen on doing a Scooby conversion. Is that better?

  6. Ahem....right.....moving on....:)

There's an interesting point here though. I'm a bit of a purist, and it's for this reason that I don't want to do this conversion to Winnie, my Champagne van. There aren't many of these left and it's important to keep rare things original.... I think.

The Tango bus is a different matter....it's got no engine, and no camping interior, although it is a Westy.... It's got a lash up A/C system fitted by the American importers and isn't the rarest vehicle to grace the freeway. So I 'm not really worried.

Well if you're a bit of a purist have you considered another vw engine? 20v turbo or vr6? Keep it vw and get the performance you're looking for

  8. What I'm saying I guess is that these buses are not exactly rare - there were millions made after all and that's why there are so many modified ones....because we can. It's also what makes our hobby that bit special.... Rat look, lowered, tubbed, patina, OG, Concours, or just somewhere dry to camp in. They are all about individuality and putting a different engine in is, well, individual!! :)

  9. T4 2.5tdi would be nice - have the same engine in my Volvo, it's a cracker! We have thought about a Passat tdi, but it won't sound right

Well I didn't know it came on a Volvo. I'm looking at the passat 1.9 tdi and the 20vt at the moment. But I know what you mean about the sound. I think I'd get away with a tdi in a t25 but the economy would be great for touring.

  12. are ya piles playin up barney ...?

  13. I'm with you on this @Grazzer in the sense that if my bus was all original then I probably wouldn't mess around with it except for a few shiny bolt on bits, but as it happens the roof is a Westy and the interior was some kind of Devon lash up so that got scrapped and I made my own, alloys & lowered for the look & if I had the dosh would deffo be going scooby!

I was going to say stop talking and get on with it but then remembered you have gotto import the Jaffa project bus, so I suppose there will be lots more talk until it arrives!

Its a shame about having to sell Winnie but life is too short to have any regrets!

  14. Oh and just so I can be the first annoying git to say....

I find access no issue around the Subaru engine in answer to @Barneyrubble , without the tinwear there's a load of room.

Can't comment on dropping the engine to do work, but bear in mind there's less fettling with fuel injection, electric ignition etc....less need to work on it I guess.

Parts wise the engine is a lot newer and I suspect you can get parts from main dealers and breakers.

  16. you can also pick up another spare good used engine for 400 bucks

  18. I know there are a lot kicking around and I love the engineering side , I know of one that has had a lot of problems with overheating and cracked engine blocks and this was a prof fitted jobbie . Are they a strong engine ? I know a bus weighs loads more than a car ? There is an alternative engine section on VZI and it makes interesting reading , not sure it would work on this forum as not enough people doing the variety of conversions themselves .,happily be proved wrong tho

  19. I know a guy who works on subaru engines. Apparently the overheating issues come on ragged cars and tow cars which haven't been well maintained/serviced. Whether this is true or not I always thought subaru engines had a good reputation for their strength and reliability.

He also recommended a common sense approach, don't just buy a shiny engine you don't know, it's best to buy a while donor car and them have the engine serviced and a diagnostic check prior to dismantling it from the car. You then know it fully works before you put it in the back of the van
    :)

  20. I'm going to buy a donor car that's roadworthy and then run it for a while to make sure it's all good - either a 2 litre Legacy or a Forester - an imprezza is likely to gave been ragged!
