I know it's been covered, but I'm very keen on doing a Scooby conversion. Is that better?

You can try and make the price start with a "4" so it sounds cheaper, but is £6000 isn't it. :)
Is that all in or engine on top?

You could get a Suzuki alto for that. But I know which I would rather have

    Yep its £6k.
That's an all in engine conversion. Up rated clutch is another £100 plus anything else you want to add.

6000 is a lot of money but i bet it looks factory fitted
here is a list of stuff i bought for a diy job it wont look as good but its half the price and it does the same job
but if i did have 6000 spare i would have it fitted by the pros
i thought mine had come in around the 2200 mark but looking at it again i think i was nearer to the 3 grand mark

    engine 500 ish
    exghaust 650
    throttle cable 40
    bellhousing 470
    cross member 165
    throttle body reverser 70
    induction manifold reverslal kit 95
    clutch 140 fuel pump 55
    speed sensor 45
    radiator and fans 160
    scoop materials 40
    heater matrix 150
sorting out the wiring loom 2 days
    temp gauge 40

If I had the skills I'd have done it myself but I don't. By a long way!
It does look factory fitted and the guys who did it have a wealth of experience.
I'd do it again tomorrow (if I had another bus, and another £6k)!!

  6. Is the van worth £6k more on the resale market?

course not but most people who convert have no intention of selling theirs.

Nope. I'd be surprised if it didn't add a few k though.
Not that value matters on a keeper.

  10. in the long run it will no doubt add value,
as vw engines become scarcer and more expensive...:(

    id be tempted to think,
that if someone wants to travel some distance [around europe ] and there looking to buy,
a scooby engine will be quite desirable...:)

  11. You guys should really have a go with a pumped up T4 engine,,,all the power you need, and 28 mpg.
    Just saying ;)

    i would never sell mine
    the wife would go first

ive spent to much money on mine to resell i wouldnt get anywhere near what ive spent back
we was half way through the restoration when we said we was in to deep to cut corners so we decided this was the van for us for the long hall
so in that case we have done the van how we want it
but taking into account how much ive saved on hotels caravans etc fuel cost maintenace etc we have made the right move and i would say with in a couple more years it will have more than paid for its self
its my ladies daily drive so the fuel bill is a big saving for us
plus mine sounds amazing in the tunnels in spain for that reason alone its awesome:):):):):):):)

Fellows so do a nice job, still not sure about cutting such a big hole in the chassis rail though.

I've managed to spend £420 in 3 weeks on petrol at 25mpg without really going anywhere far.
    At 35mpg? that would have cost £300 saving £120 - £40 a week. If I kept that up, which I won't,
    £6,000/£40 = 3 years to break even.
    or
At 25mpg it costs approx 25p/mile
At 35mpg it costs approx 18p/mile
7p saved per mile x 85,700 miles to break even.
So tricky to justify on those grounds, though I'd probably be well into my next engine by then which is worth considering.

i think when fellows cut a hole in the chassis they put a plate over it to strenthen that section

    i didnt cut mine

zed you got to much time on your hands hahahaha

  17. They do - all the holes in my chassis have strengthening plates welded in around them. Even the holes cut for the brackets that the radiator hangs from.

I'm good at maths. ;) I used maths for 20 years non-stop for a living. (I hope I got it about right!)

its not all about the saving its allso about the sound i dont get to drive it very often but when i do it brings a smile to my face

i can allways tell when my lady as arrived picking me up from the pub as i can hear it a mile away

  20. Agreed. If it was about saving money we wouldn't have bought the vans in the first place. The good thing about doing more mpg is that you can increase the range by around 50 miles even while cruising at 70mph.
