Hi folks, My '79 is currently in resto, being welded. It has a working 1600 engine which is going to be serviced and put back in. But Someone I know has a 2l scooby and is upgrading it to a 2.4. He's asked if I'm interested in his old one. I know for a fact that his one is exceptional, and I would never have to worry about it letting me down. My setup is fairly standard at the moment. What would I need to upgrade, in order to accommodate a Subaru engine? Brakes? Suspension? Gearbox? Door handles? All/none of the above? More? (The door handles are probably OK, actually) I haven't got a scooby-doo about this, and I don't want to buy the engine and then find I'm having to spend thousands on upgrades, when my standard setup is ok.
You need more than just an engine: Bell-housing / conversion plate Cooling (being the main one) Loom / ECU Engine hanger Exhaust Etc etc No need to uprate anything else depending on how you intend to drive it.
@Moons @baygeekster I'm pretty certain I'll stick a Scooby motor in the westy, long term reliability and all that! I'll be asking some questions as well
Which future? I thought T4s were the future, then T5s, now Scooby. Please put these in the correct order then we can know which is the future, which the new future and which the final future.
I never even thought about those bits! I suppose it'll depend on how much the I end up spending on the welding.
I'm going to do it booked into fellows in March. Trying not to think about the £, but reckon will transform. They are going to uprated clutch and rebuild existing gearbox also. Not sure on 2.0 or 2.2 yet.
I'd be interested to know how it goes. I know they're a lot more reliable. The cost is the biggest concern for me. Especially as I'm at the start of a resto, and I'm already leaking money like my van leaks oil!
I've got a 2L Scooby in mine. Had it about 3 years and would recommend it 100% for reliability (and for fuel economy).
Fellows would be my place of choice to source the motor. Last time I was talking to them, Bern was with me too, they said if ever I/we wanted to visit them, just to call up and arrange a mutual time. It might have been Perry Fellows who we chatted to. Questions I would like answering are: Fellows afterservice - what are they like for warranty should something go wrong. Have any issues arose to the guys who are running them now. What are the Scooby motors like, in a bus on long distances/motorway driving etc. I know Baysearcher and Chrisgooner have no regrets, Ive had a look at both buses and they do look spot on. I am very very tempted
