no ignition switches can be one of those items that gives you random faults though... could be fine at normal speeds, but once the coil starts pulling more current over an extended period it might cause a voltage drop to it... next time you take it out for a spin and it conks out, try feeling the switch and the wiring, see if it feels warm/hot!!
That is a top idea Paul and next on my list of things to try on my own bus. Intermittent electrical faults are the pits.
Update time... Been looking with my brother again this morning and cleaned the filters in the regulator and the carbs, blew through the jets and went for a bother test... No change. He (an electrician) tested the voltage across the battery at idle, load and increasing load while stationary and it recorded a relatively steady 13.45v We went for a drive with the meter hooked up in the cab and waited for the fault. When it was running ok it registered 13.45ish volts. When the indicators were on it dropped to 13.1ish. When the fuel starvation problem kicked in the regulator filter emptied and the voltage dropped to 13.2 and below. My brother (a vw nut) suggests that it should be running at 14.1v constant... Does this ring a bell with any of you guys at all? Please don't tell me im into alternator renewal!!
It has cut out if I try to rev and bring it back to life. There is some misfiring too... My brother suggested it might be running a bit lean
don't supposed he measured the voltage on the coil while you were driving? The coil has a feed of its own from the ignition switch...
What is running off the coil feed?? This is what I have isolated on my bus. I've got to re wire the feeds for some items running off that circuit along with a new ignition switch. I'll do tests tomorrow and feed back or you.
Just a thought, whilst going down the electric route is the earth strap from gearbox to body good? no good getting power to the coil if you cant get it out again
I had a similar problem recently, bad misfire at about 55-60mph then no power but lots of heat through heaters. Mine was defiantly the timing , i had disturbed it trying to eliminate a flat spot , i advanced it a tiny bit at a time and got it ruining fine again (anti clockwise ) maybe Worth a try!
Woohoo!!!! Taking the fuel pump off the coil has cured the fuel starvation and she's just done the test runs perfectly!! This probably leaves me with a poor spark and some more investigations before its cured properly but I'm a much happoer camper!!
Well done. Take it for a really good test drive though. I've just isolated mine. I have volt readings written like Rainman on a piece of paper. In conclusion a loss of 1.24volts across my coil lost from some added extras. Time to get out the relays. And all this since the over charging madness over Easter.
My bus has had a second new alternator. First over charged and fried bits so it had a new coil, ignition bits, regulator and a new leisure battery.
