High speed stalling... again!

  1. you really do need to pull the top off a carb to see whether or not you have fuel when it conks out on you...

fuel pump and filter are fine in that position, and the low fuel in the tank won't be an issue, as the van will run until the tank is dry!!

what make fuel pump is that?

Change your fuel pipes. Sounds nuts I know but change it. I had one in with twin carbs fitted. The pipe running to the N/S carb would close like an artery and restrict the fuel flow when the engine got hot to the point of running that carb dry. Make sure the pipe you have is a good secure fit even before the clip goes on. Also make sure the clips are securing on the hose to the metal pipe from fuel tank to carb. Also that your fuel filter isn't restricting it.

If you can make it do what it's doing at home in the drive, switch off immediately. Clamp the main fuel hose before T piece and take the air filters off. Give a few pulls on the throttle linkage to see if fuel is squirting into the engine. Failing that take the tops off ad see if fuel is in the carb.

Other than that, change the condenser again.

Just run it round the block to get petrol with the pump unmounted.... Problem running occurred on the way to the point it stalled and was worse after filling up

Petrol station is 1/4 mile away :(

Fuel pump as the fella said there. Much quieter!

  5. is vehicle over hot? pulled plug when stopped for a look ?very dry / very wet ? poss fuel evaporation

If it helps it's getting worse as the van is warmer.... Going to swap the Petronix out for pints in a mo... Freudian slip : points :D

  7. I know it's not cheap but it might be time to find a rolling road with a good air cooled mech and pay the piper :(

I did a search for broken Petronix earlier and this gave me a little hope... The last two posts are spot on!

I've pondered this during this evening, whilst I thought its only got 300 miles on it is a constant problem from pre engine rebuild, with the solex's and then the webers. The fuel supply has been stripped, replaced and renewed and it seems odd that the same symptoms would be present through all of those stages of rebuild.

With a bit of luck it'll resolve the problem and Landyn will have just been treated to a few new shiny bits in the process!!

Will have a look at relocating the fuel pump lower, although it didn't have too much of an effect earlier. I've also been reading the thread on VZi about the prototype bay that caught fire in the way out of Bug Jam and there was a good suggestion about installing a solenoid cut off under the tank to prevent the gravity feed continuing to fuel an engine fire... Probably a good investment considering the capacity of the extinguishers we carry!

I feel your pain. My bus has an annoying intermittent fault that I thought I had diagnosed. It just did 112 miles (10 miles to go to TLB summer camp) and it conks out. Coast to a stop, turn the key and away I go again.

I can rule out fuel delivery, coil, ignition system etc. All that's left is ignition feed. It's almost like the feed to the coil looses some volts. Not all but some. Stuck my head in the engine bay and it's all cool. No over heating. Nothing's loose. Other than that it went faultlessly.

  15. had the same problem replaced the fuel sended to find that the label on it came of and every so often stopped the petrol getting through , or may be your van telling u to slow down lol owen nw  8) ::)

Right, some positive results this morning... Changed points and condenser, no change. Stopped at my garage and he said fuel straight away, gave me a new filter and sent me on my way... Changed the filter and instant improvement. It would seem that the intermittent running has slowly been pulling crap through the pipe that wasn't visible earlier... A post mortem of the filter :

[IMG] the tube bit was well blocked and I imaging that overnight petrol is filtering through and being used on the short runs before it stalls.

Had a good run, but eventually went wrong again so I suspect more crap in the first pipe and probably the tank which is much more of a concern :(

Going to change that first length of pipe now and see what effect that has, but removing the tank seems on the cards at the moment for another clean, which is a real pain :(

I popped the new fuel sender out to have a look in the tank a dropped the sender wire behind the tank out of reach which just compounded my misery, plus... The tank is clearly half full, which is contrary to what the dial and new sender are telling me... So let's add that to the to do list!!
