Auto boxes not really my bag, sooo...

Does anyone know where I can get the sump gaskets? I can hardly see the gearbox, it's minging and so is every part of the bus within 2 feet! Customer would like me to take it out, clean it up and replace all the oil seals and gaskets.

Funny what a quick tune up can turn into...

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

can't get the one, the other is special order/out of stock at gsf and cool air! @paulweeding says make your own from some special cork stuff, it's on my to do list

  3. make your own from a sheet of thin cork gasket Steve... besides, you can't get the one for the diff sump, and it's a 6 week order time on the atf pan gasket...

Gimme 5 and I'll find you a ebay link :)

Cheers chaps, I'll make them then, I can't wait 6 weeks (well I could but I doubt customer would be over the moon about that).
It's chucking oil out of the torque converter slots which is EVERYWHERE. There's tar-board stuff stuck on the metal under the tank/over the gearbox and that's soaked as well as the starter (dripping). What a mess! I imagine there must be a seal or two to replace here as well.

    paradox likes this.
  6. Yeah, I had a bay come in last october, and I had to do them... 6 weeks was a bit of a joke... tried thick gasket paper first, and that weeped as soon as I put the oil in, the cork seems to have done the job nicely!!

If you cut the atf pan first, you can use the waste from the centre of that to make the diff sump pan gasket... think that allows you to make 4 sets out of one big sheet

If it's flinging oil from the torque converter, you might have to drop the block and do the torque converter seal too

    out of stock

Paul Weeding, it's such an unholy mess under there the owner wants me to take it out and clean it up and check the crank seal too while I'm at it. The rest of the engine is 200 miles new and nice and dry. It seems a shame to cake it with gearbox oil, so it's now or never and out with the lot. Not really "looking forward to it", but we think the result will be worth the labour cost. I think he's already been the victim of a few ruined holidays hence the new engine.
But as law of sod would have it, it's a T25 engine and a who knows what gearbox. I think the van may have started life as a 1600 judging by the cut off air filter stand, but could have been F.I. ??? Do F.I have the same stand for the air filter?

  9. pass, I really can't remember!! I'll have a quick look about, see if anyone is showing one!!

FI does indeed use a bracket like the 1600 air filter bracket.... has a couple of small differences to it tho

you can just see it in this pic

It's been chopped off to fit the twin carbs attached to the T25 engine then. At least there is hope the auto box has always been there. It seems lovely box other than the leakage but maybe not all is as well as appears...
Tell me oracle, I'm wondering about the type of box. I know there are two types of shifter lever and two types of boxes, but don't know if these go hand in hand. I don't remember the age of the bus.
Early shifters have a button under both sides of the T that pull up, later have a button on the side. This has side button.
When you start it up, if you engage gear straight away it just sits there for a while. So is this early vacuum box or do they all do that or is something bust/leaking, or the other acceptable answer which is "no idea". I don't remember this delay on any other auto I've driven including one I know is an early one.
Every day's a school day and I fear I'm about to learn that auto boxes are a PITA, other than driving them in which case they're great. :)

So it does, but look at the VWH one you linked to which looks entirely different... Someone has bunged up a generic pic...
If it's a std rotating shaft seal I can avoid the delay and the scene tax by reading the numbers off it, if it's like the VHW pic I'm stuffed.

  13. especially if it's the late/non vacuum box as they used it on the t25 too

I think that's the one Paul. What's the difference visually? anything really obvious I might remember? So far I've glanced at it and thought "glad I don't have to touch that oily fecka"

  16. vac box has a cable all the way to the carbs, late box has a kick down lever on the rhs of the box... acc cable goes to that, then a rod from the kick down does the throttle at the carbs

I think the gear shift levers are different on the box too

Rod to carbs with, it seems, a cable inside perhaps for fine adjustment, so a late one then. Bugger, Bentley only covers the early ones. Just as well it works!

    Thanks again Paul.
