Fitting a cam. Complete rebuild

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Borninabug, Jun 30, 2015.

  1. obviously need to buy a cam and bearings. A set of gaskets. What else will I need to order to get on with the job without hold ups.

  2. Full gasket set to split the case, might as well do the big ends whilst your in there and the main crank bearings, and if you are doing all that you may as well do barrels and pistons aswell

  3. New lifters with a new cam...

As above.. You're in there, so you might as well refresh the whole engine...

I'd suggest casual slacks or old jeans....hold ups would definitely snag;)

All the bearings, it's had steel sludge for oil.

And if you are doing the crank bearing then a decent puller to get the gears off.
and a magic strong set of pliers to get the split ring off that holds the gears on the crank.

  7. You mean snap ring pliers... ;)

  8. Yep. Snap ring off in a trice with a proper pair of paddle-ended jobbies.

  9. And before it goes back in new clutch?

Yes or similar. The only pliers that worked were the smallest set of cheap stainless needle nose pliers I own...with notches filed in the backs of the jaws... now i have done the job, I have the right pliers.

  11. Up to this point so far

12 month old dipstick boot was rock hard
Heads look ok to me if a bit black valves look ok[IMG]72D130_zpsjohbakjo.jpg.html][IMG][/URL]

What else do I need to check on the heads

This is where most of the cam seems to be[IMG]

If you pull off a barrel you can see half the cam. :)
If you pull 2 off you can see all the lobes.

  13. What makes you think the cam is knackered ?

The valves barely move and the engine is full of sludge...

Take the valves out one at a time and look for any pitting on the seats. Check the guides for wear and wobbly valve stems.

  18. Already on it.
My dad made a set of valve seat cutters years ago that have been dug out so three angle valve seats to follow and new guides if necessary

  19. I would change the exhaust valves anyway. If they have got hot and a head drops off all your hard work will be down the drain. Not everyone does but I would.
