Engine woes for new owner - haven't even received my V5 yet :(

  1. Yup! And nooo regrets :)

  2. And as the "wise sage guys " no doubt know ,u get to a (financial)point ,and realise "hell, i"m in too deep with this one" (the wife divorced u, the dog bogged off ,can"t make the rent......)

  3. Engines on the way out, I'm going to start pulling it apart when it's out, I want to know what's up with it.
I really think I'm going to be more comfortable with my local recommended guy building it, with better components than TES, and be done with it, then any issues the guy is on my doorstep.
I think it's going to work out a couple of hundred more to do that, but I think the extra money is going to buy me extra piece of mind in the long run.
He has told me to strip the motor apart, and the more I can get off the lower the bill as its less labour for his side.
That way I get a look at the internals, and I may even learn something!
I will be getting an external oil filter, and possibly additional cooler fitted, and some gauges.
Funnily jim at TES said not to both with this :s

three ways of looking at it..
    1. Whats your gut instinct saying?
    2. Whats Zed recommend?
    3. Whats Paul W recommending

you'll not go far wrong at that!

Cooler's a bit OTT for the size and could make it run too cool unless you're hacking down the motorway...

  6. Ok, so just run a filter kit? They are expandable at a later date anyway if I was to go to hotter climates?

Yes, you just daisy-chain it in after the filter in one big loop. :)
I say this because my 1955 in the winter barely warmed the oil at all under 60mph and I had to wrap the cooler in bacofoil. That's measured as it comes from the sump before it goes through the extra then the og cooler so the oil in the engine must have been really cold and therefore the engine must have been as well which isn't good for it. It warms up ok now the weathers improved. Even with a 1776 people mostly don't fit coolers.

  8. Really you should put in a stat valve if you put in an external cooler... this allows the oil to get up to 90°c before it opens (it's actually partially open to stop a sudden pressure drop when the valve opens)

    :)

I'd go with the local guy too for your build... if there are any issues, then he's on your doorstep... harder to fob off that way!!

plus his build price seems more realistic to me!! :)

  9. So the engines out and in the garage, I've started to strip it, but was wondering if there's a how to anywhere for stripping it all down and putting it back together?

I need a new/good second hand set of tin wear and mine is in pieces all welded together!

  10. retro dubs down in Truro carry a few second hand spares

  11. Try "Megabug" 0208 3177333 they stock lots of second hand stock

  12. Sounds like you re doing well there bud. Keep at it and :)

  13. So engine is now down to the crank case on my bench, pistons and barrels removed, the pistons don't seem to have had any damage, neither does the top end, heads not cracked etc, con rod 1/2/3 all have no movement in and out when rattled, although 4 moves in andouille about 5mm when pushed and pulled in and out. Not sure what this mmeans

  14. You got the Bentley workshop manual mate ? also see L.pettite (someone I see spoke off in hushed tones) on this and other sites re engine builds has recently brought out a book.Would be of opinion they might be what you are looking for .

Laurie's book has been delayed until the winter unfortunately.

  16. Andouille?? Smoked sausage???

Sounds like the big end has spun and chewed up the bearing!!

    Here's what you might find!!

  17. yes thought as much.
what damage do you thnink this will have caused?
the pistons do seem to be scored down the sides, no sure if this is the crap from the bearing?

is this an issue caused by overheating then?

  18. low oil pressure can eat bearings... also pushing the engine hard so the oil is over hot......

Damage wise, crank needed a regrind, rod was shot, think most of the internals were kippered due to metal going round the engine... That engine ^^ I pretty much scrapped the whole unit... Type 1s are cheap as chips, so it wasn't worth going any further than that!!

  19. So I've dropped it to my local guy tonight, who doesn't think the prognosis is as bad as first thought. The bottom end needs rebuilding as one of the bearings has had it, crank needs a rearing and the case needs a line bore, but the cylinder heads seem ok, pistons have some scoring but should polish out, so we maybe spending a bit less, but I'm defo in the market for a set of vdo gauges, oil pressure, oil temp and possibly tachometer. Also getting a full flow filter fitted, and maybe an extra cooler with a dash mounted switch to turn on a fan incase things get to hot but not sure if that is nessesary.

Just need to get the tinware sorted out, one of the mounts for the fan needs to be redone as its lifting the fan off slightly.

IMO a remote cooler and full flow is overkill on a 1600.
Drive it sensibly and neither are needed.
