zed - it's not a fully brand new motor, it's one of those £1300 jobbies! The pulley is fine no leaks from there but the rocker cover clips had no tension to either of them and *******ed oil everywhere :(

I hope it's not a lemon else it'll either be a type 4 or a Laurie Petit motor built with care!

Not a lemon mate, they're nice motors! Pulley won't leak, but if you thought you might like a bling ali one, that's where the trouble starts (or not because you know now. ). I found out when I was replacing a broken remtec with a "standard" engine and the pulley I wanted to reuse from the remtec wouldn't fit in the hole. Asked around a bit and that's how they are. :)

1641 with a slightly sporty cam?

It's the steel pulley that came with it - I must say the engine fired up really easy, ticks over a bit high but I've not yet run it in or had the carb tuned & jetted correctly. I'm sure it'll be ok :)

  5. Had similar problems, stuck with it for 2 years = £3k+ in garage costs and only managed to use the van for less than half that as it was generally parked up broken. Gave up, got a T5, bloody love it. I'd say stick with the T2 - they have faaar more character but put a time/money limit on it - once you hit either call time

  6. this sounds a reasonable solution ,
you will have an engine tested b4 its fitted, with most rebuilt engines YOU have to test it in the vehicle as the builder wont have run it up, ;)

  7. My engines are run up before they leave :)

  9. Bungle,

I havent mate, tbh i really want the warrenty with an off the shelf or a proper rebuilder, if any can provide that they may be worth a call.

Ive strateed to remove the motor tonight, and got it to the stage where is ready to unbolt and pull away.

ive droped the oil, which was thick black, with a lot of metal content.

There was 2 or 3 10mm sized flakes of metal that came out, the straigner is bent and caved in but this could just be well worn, ive had the rocker covers off and cant move any of the tappets/valves much so not sure how much damage there is.

  10. TES say there engines are hot bench tested, this should mean run up before they leave the shop.

surely Laurie would not put me onto james at TES if he did not have confidence in there engine rebuild capabilities?

One can wreck an engine whoever builds it if it's not set up right, has air leak lean burn, timing's wrong, or we drive too fast. So laurie gets to take lots of broken ones apart and TES engines are recognisable from the colours they paint them. Laurie has volunteered to me several times that TES's machining is very good quality. Likewise if they were badly built, he'd have noticed because of the paint. Pretty well everyone elses are an unrecognisable collection of parts so maybe it's not so obvious who the good and bad builders are unless the owners know and tell him?
Laurie would certainly not recommend a bad builder and as you say, TES is the one he has the most faith in.

  12. I wouldn't think he would mate, he has a mighty fine reputation in VW circles...:)

  13. So the position I'm now in is

Green engine from TES at £949

Rebuild my engine with local chap who is well know around here for £1200 ish

Both offer a 12 month 12k warranty, obv Nigel is on my doorstep if things go tits up, TES are not.

I think a call to TES is needed to see if they can better there price, maybe throw in a full flow oil filter kit or something.

So tes is £250 cheaper, but you want a further reduction to swing the deal? Confused.com

  15. Nope!

    Meant Nigel Allen not TES!

I'm really stuck on this decision, I'm being told to got either way by different people!

  16. there isn't a right way. flip a coin and go for it

  20. id go with someone local or someone you can deliver and collect,
would save a few quid on couriers, which can be thrown at the engine..
