Engine noise, I think. doesn't sound good.

  1. see video below of the movement in flywheel. it is tight.

    Defo not good mate...

  5. What do you think is the problem?

  6. As paul said, the crankshaft has probably snapped. Strip it and see !!

  7. How why would that happen, I've had it a couple of months drive at no more than 50mph. Check oil every time I go out.

  8. yep, looks jst like mine did when my flywheel snapped. Fubar'd the case as well. Time to start looking for another engine I'm afraid.

  9. My engine was a recon from Elite and it went bang after 1000 miles but it was the PO that bought it and being in Penzance too far away to try and do anything about it.

Well Im quite sure the damages have been done to the bearing probably crank and case maybe even flywheel? It defo needs striping and someone whos got knowleges needs check/measure all the bits...in my case the flywheel had come loose as I suspected the machinist took too much material off the crank on the surface where it bolts flywheel (no idea why he did it) and likely the end bearing sized causing the flywheel vibration/comming loose.. Hope you guys undrstand what I mean as Im still crap on my technical englishhaha;-) Anyway I remember (and it happened about 15 years ago) I only replaced the end bearing and changed the flywheel and ran it happily for quite long time.. But it all depends on damages and I recomend to find someone with knowledge and do it properly...

  11. Broken crankshaft dude... no two ways about it!!

It's not unusual for it to happen, but not a regular occurrence by any means!! I think @zed had a type 1 motor with a snapped crank!! Likely as not it has been driven hard in a former life, the crank has been over-revved and bent, then it has been reground true, but there is an in built inherent weakness once it has bent!!

  12. Hi Paul

Is it repairable or beyond repairable?

    Thanks

  13. I should imagine that it's going to be 80% junk, as the case will be hammered, and you don't know what metal particulates will have gone round the oil system!!

I'd be looking at possibly keeping the heads, flywheel, and possibly the con-rods... You won't know until you get it stripped down!!

  14. Hi all

I am going to start the strip down process tomorrow.
Having not done it before any hints and tips would be appreciated.

I am thinking of stripping as much as I need then taking a head off and see if I can see a broken crankshaft.

    Thanks

  15. Take one head of first, then the Barrels that side, then depending on where it is broken you may see it. If you have any plusgas spray the head studs tonight. If you do need to strip the case, don't lever it apart with a screwdriver !!! Also if it needs stripping there is a nut that people miss. Its on the right when looking from the rear (when fitted to a vehicle) At the flywheel end just above the sump buldge !!

  16. The Crank is Cast Iron, and for this reason VW never approved their engines being used as aircraft engines.
In my youth, at The Tiger Club, Redhill, an owner of a Druine Turbulent hand started the engine with nobody in the cockpit, and up on its nose it went.
I changed the prop for him, and off he went flying, only to return after a few minutes, scratching his head.
If you climbed the oil P/X would drop to half pressure, and if you dropped the nose, there was a "clonk" and the P/X was normal.
You guessed it, the Crank was snapped at an angle, if you climbed the crack opened up, and then closed when the load on the prop was reduced.(end float)
That was over 50 years ago, nowadays all engines have to be stripped for internal inspection after a prop strike, and I for one know why!!

art b and paradox like this.

  17. I'm from notts too

There's a vw meet at the ferry boat in burton joyce tomorrow 12-4 only 5 min away, if you're free might be worth nipping down meet a few local vw guys who might be able to help, and I know one of the guys who should be going is selling a couple of reasonable priced turnkey engines

  18. Hi 68earlybay

I might nip down tomorrow. Meet a few of the locals.

Shame that I won't be bringing mine.

    Thanks for the invite.

  19. worth checking out the weight of a turnkey. Might affect your choice of transport. I put mine in the back of my dads Citroen estate and it was about at its max load.
